RIP Officer Gringo. You did good, old boy.

RIP Officer Gringo. You did good, old boy.

And now his watch has ended...

Aww shit. The look in their eyes. The officer isn't sad. He's proud of his K9 colleague and admires his long, hard work on the force before retirement. The doggy isn't sad either. He's happy to have served so well for so long beside wonderful people.

I think I'll go cry in a corner now.

Some say he's just moved on to his next watch.

Heaven just received it's newest good boy.

This is Weston, he's my dog and he works as a therapy dog at Navy hospitals.

Heres another picture of him in front of our hospital: https://imgur.com/a/GyADWz8

There's an old military tradition that military working dog have to outrank their handler. The thought being that the handler would then be liable under the UCMJ if they ever abused their partner.

Wes is handled by a Lieutenant, so we thought it appropriate to carry on that tradition and give him his rank.

Thank God for veterans and Golden retrievers!! Weston is a gorgeous boy!!! Absolutely gorgeous!!!Thank him for his service!!!

Lieutenant Commander Weston? 😄

This is Benny! We visit hospitals together

Not to sound crass but I almost wish I was in a hospital so I can hang out with Benny

Thats cool. He has more friends than me anyway, so why not add to the list...

Absolutely adorable! Good job, Benny.... It would make my day if you showed up at my hospital 😍😘

Benny’s only job is to make people smile, but he is sure good at it ❤️

She seems friendly enough, but hey, who doesn't love Dogs?

Haha, we thought it was the dog who was the new intern. Helping supervise! :)

Sleeping on the job. Tsk tsk tsk. Still a goodboye, though.

Pup

This is Morty. He was deployed in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria and jumped 30 feet out of a helicopter when he caught the scent of someone in need. He’s now in NC for Hurricane Florence.

Do you think rescue dogs think humans are idiots for constantly needing rescue?

I mean, look at parents of young children or first responders. Humans think humans are idiots for constantly needing rescue.

First responder here. Yes humans are fucking dumb.

Looks like they passed away in 2016: https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/real-life-stories/remembering-911-hero-search-dogs-13152751

In June 2016 the last surviving rescue dog Bretagne said goodbye aged 16 and was given a hero's farewell. Firefighters and rescue workers lined the sidewalk as her body, draped in an American flag, was carried out of Fairfield Animal Hospital by her owner, Denise Corliss.

Bretagne, see my other comment for info.

What's this good girl's name though?

This is a little too fat for me.

...whut?

Chill, ding-a-ling. I found it on imgur like this.

Those poor pups started getting depressed by finding so many dead people, that rescuers started hiding in the rubble to lift the spirits of the K9's.

I currently foster a search and rescue dog named after Riley a golden retriever that did SAR work at ground zero with his handler Christopher Selfridge. RIP to the original Riley hope mine can somewhat live up to the expectations.

It sucks that the humans get respiratory protection equipment, but the doggies, who have a 40X more sensitive olfactory system dont :/ poor lil floofs

Dogs probably don’t live long enough for the respiratory damage to lead to cancer. Then again, just getting the dog to wear it anyways would be difficult at best .

17 years later and this is the first time I've ever seen this image. A different kind of hero.

I wish there are more photos like these. Humans weren’t the only heroes.

That just looks so overwhelming for anyone, dogs or humans. I’m so thankful we have such brave selfless heros in this world.

That’s a good boy.

My throat tightened up.
