Successful Diplomacy

This was my entry for this month's contest, Brevity is the Soul of Wit, scoring a respectable 5th place. Funnily enough, this was made before the news of the (potential) resolution of the Macedonia naming conflict, but I wish they would have gone with this option.

I mean what Greece and Macedonia should do is unify and conquer everything that Alexander the Great did. Then Macedonia would truly exist and everyone would be happy. All conflicts in the region would be solved and the Olympians would return to earth.

That timing is actually quite impressive.

Macedoni-A. Macedoni-B.

It solves itself.

Greece and Macedonia rightful Roman clay. Make Istanbul Byzantium again!

You could even say that he was very lucky with the coincidence.

Maybe u/jesus_stalin is further into the world of global politics than any of us realized.

Former Ottoman Vilayet of Southern Macedonia.

Nice touch adding the two nations alphabetically closest on either side.

Dad's Greek, I'm looking forward to the lecture when I show him this! Hahahah

But now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople!

Macedonia should be called North Greece and Greece should be called South Macedonia. Now everyone is happy.

That's not your business, unless you're a Turk

Or go with the Roman Solution. First Macedonia (Macedonia Prima), and Wholesome Macedonia (Macedonia Salutaris). Yes, that's what they really called it.

Macedonia has agreed to change its name to North Macedonia. It's not completely confirmed though, I believe it still needs to be put to a national referendum.

The absolute Illuminati madlad!

Former Ottoman Eyalet of Rumeli, Mora, Yanina and Selanik.

Please explain who is the bit Greece one?

I would like some funds for this mission please.

I already proposed that they can keep the name as long as they adopt Greek as their official language. Win-win right?

You are correct but there is also widespread support for the measure, the President not withstanding. However, the support doesn’t appear as widespread in Greece itself but I admit I don’t know how much that matters.

Maybe your comic is what sparked the initiative to solve the dispute.

Nobody tell him.

I haven't heard about it either, but I guess it's a big enough deal to get an entire wikipedia page.

The dispute arises from the ambiguity in nomenclature between the Republic of Macedonia, the adjacent Greek region of Macedonia and the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon (which falls mostly within Greek Macedonia). Citing historical and irredentist concerns, Greece opposes the use of the name "Macedonia" by the Republic of Macedonia without a geographical qualifier such as "Northern Macedonia" for use "by all ... and for all purposes".[1] As millions of ethnic Greeks identify themselves as Macedonians, unrelated to the Slavic people who are associated with the Republic of Macedonia, Greece further objects to the use of the term "Macedonian" for the neighboring country's largest ethnic group and its language. The Republic of Macedonia is accused of appropriating symbols and figures that are historically considered part of Greek culture such as the Vergina Sun and Alexander the Great, and of promoting the irredentist concept of a United Macedonia, which involves territorial claims on Greece, Bulgaria, Albania and Serbia.

If that's the case, then it's not long until Lib Dems gain a majority at Westminster.

Former Roman Province of Dalmatia.

I’m out of the loop. What’s the news?

Make Istanbul Constantinople again!

I’m pretty sure that’s further to the west near modern day Croatia/Slovenia/Bosnia. Would be the Roman province of Macedonia.

feel like pure shit just want a lib dem supermajority x

Fucking RAGING that the bellend who unseated him now sits as an independent after getting suspended from Labour. By-election NOW

I'm Greek and still upvoted you.

Here, it should work now:

Don't have to pay back Euromonies if not Greece

What was the conflict in the first place?

I like to imagine that the president of Macedonia is a redditor and he got the idea from the contest.

ssssssh Istanbul is actually a Greek name

What isn't Greek !

I know where the door is you don't have to kick. Will you please stop kicking me!

Bring back Nick Clegg tbqh.
