I'm going to go ahead and not Google that and just assume it's as bad as I'm imagining.
The worst prt of this might be that she may never be able to do stunt work again
No, the worst part of this is that she might never get back to a 100% functional life on her own again. Stuntwork is far off at the horizon.
Just for those that don't know, the 'nerves torn from spine' is the worst of her injuries.
That will cause her agnonising pain for the rest of her life. I would not wish that on my worst enemy. A friend of mine had one nerve torn from a motorbike accident, and he ended up committing suicide because he couldn't live with the pain.
Yes, it is that bad.
No, the worst part of this is that this all happened for a fucking Resident Evil movie.
I did. It's pretty fucking bad. Don't google it.
(not gross, I promise)
"2 weeks in a coma, brain bleed, brain swelling, severed main artery in the neck, crushed & degloved face, several broken ribs, paralyzed arm, shattered scapula, broken clavicle, broken humerus, broken radius & ulna, with an open wound and a 7.5 piece of bone missing, amputated thumb, torn fingers, 5 nerves torn out of the spinal cord.... not my funnest day on set."
I might seem crass with this but...
The worst prt of this might be that she may never be able to do stunt work again. Stunt people arent in it for the glory or celebrity, they are professionals who are doing what they love and are at the top of their game. But such a traumatic injury might make her uninsurable, even if she does make a full recovery. In effect she wont be able to do something that she loves doing.

HO LEE FUK
I'm gonna google it.
I regret doing that.
What's fucking amazing is that people can survive that nowadays. We used to be so much more killable.
She sacrificed way too much for an overrated movie series.
I'd think she has sacrificed too much even if she was doing a stunt for the next Citizen Kane, Godfather, or The Dark Knight. Hopefully she gets treated right by both the studio and insurance.
Anakin had less injuries and they turned that mofo into darth vader
I received minor injuries to the spinal cord in a bicycle accident when I was 14. Today, I'm 21 but I still can not sit straight upright in a chair for more than 5 minutes.
I hope the best for this woman. She deserves FULL medical coverage and, with her lifelong injuries, a lifetime of support. Hollywood, health insurance companies, and hospitals will probably try to screw her over, but I hope it doesn't happen. She sacrificed way too much for an overrated movie series. She deserves a lot.
I agree they deserve recognition, but the reason the oscars refuse to include the category is fear of extreme risk-taking in pursuit of an award. I can see why they don't want to be responsible for pushing an already dangerous field any further.
To save anyone a terrifying Google search, heres the definition of a "Degloved" injury.
"A degloving injury is a type of avulsion in which an extensive section of skin is completely torn off the underlying tissue, severing its blood supply. It is named by analogy to the process of removing a glove."
I believed you. I shouldn't have, but I did. You were right, though.
Sometimes modern medicine is indistinguishable from magic.
2 weeks in a coma, brain bleed, brain swelling, severed main artery in the neck, crushed & degloved face, several broken ribs, paralyzed arm, shattered scapula, broken clavicle, broken humerus, broken radius & ulna, with an open wound and a 7.5 piece of bone missing, amputated thumb, torn fingers, 5 nerves torn out of the spinal cord.... not my funnest day on set.
Jesus, how is this poor woman still alive?
Maybe she can play one of the zombies in the next movie.
Honestly, no movie, no matter how entertaining, moving, or artistically significant, is worth this happening to someone. I'm not happy when I hear there was an animal accident on a movie set, let alone a serious injury or death to human crew or cast member. I hope that as a stunt performer she had expensive but very comprehensive insurance that will help her recover as fully as possible... but I doubt she'll be jumping off moving vehicles for a long time, if ever.
I mean, there's a definitely a difference between almost dying on the set of a masterpiece and almost dying on a cash-grab franchise.
It goes from being, "I almost died filming that movie" to "I almost died filming that movie."
faces help too
You only die if you lose oxygenated blood.
That's a silly thing to say. Death from blood loss is most often caused by loss of blood pressure, which happens when you lose a large amount of blood regardless of whether it comes from a vein or an artery.
there's a now famous story of a woman who was having kinky sex with her husband in a cabin deep in the mountains/woods and she was handcuffed to the steel unbreakable bed frame when her husband had a heart attack and died. she was stuck handcuffed there for days with no help until she degloved both her hands so she could slip out of the cuffs and drive into town. moral of the story, use fake handcuffs if you're into that sort of thing so you can just break them if you have to.
That list of injuries is horrific. Not sure I'd want to wake up from that...
Do you like Huey Lewis and the news?
NSFL that shit, dude
Your mom sounds like a fun lady
IIRC she was traveling full speed directly at a camera that was supposed to lift up out of the way at the last second. There was some tripwire she ran over or past that was supposed to make the crane lift up. The crane didn't lift up like it was supposed to, so she ran straight into the camera at top speed, head-on.
Gerald's Game is an awesome book. :)
My mum did this with a facemask/face cleanser thing when I was younger and started screaming for help. Scared the shit out of me.
Can you tell me what it is without giving me the nightmares?
Glad she woke up relatively soon. Sounds like she has a lot of hardship ahead of her and I wish her all the best. That she lost her thumb is probably gonna have a lot of impact in her life. Having thumbs is one of the pluses of being a human.
He said the ER doctor told him it's a very common accident.
Just another reason not to get married. Or to wield the One Ring.
This is why stunt men and woman deserve to have an oscar category
I'm also quite fond of my spinal nerves.
How are they even overrated? They all have like a 20% or 30% on RT. I mean even if you hate them do you really think those ratings are too high?
But like you said the quality of the movie really has no bearing. She got hurt on the job and a job's a job and hopefully she was correctly insured by the job.
Yeah why did I check it
There aren't any pictures of her on the web. In any case degloving doesn't have to be as extreme as people are thinking. Really to be a degloving it just has to have the skin completely torn off anywhere on the face. Most people here are imagining her entire face being peeled off but its more likely that she degloved a cheek or a brow.
Edit: To clarify, Full facial degloving is almost unheard of. There are lots of thin bits of skin on the face that will just tear rather than keeping in one piece with the rest of the skin. So usually a brow or a cheek is split up deep and wide and tugged with extreme force by something that causes the entirety of the skin to rip off to the muscle/bone. With fingers its easy to take off the whole lot because its very similar skin. With faces you have noses, eye sockets, mouths and ears that stop this from happening.
It's could go either way. Either she will be shunned by Hollywood, and as a consulate professional, refuse to do low budget work and SAG will screw her over as they often do in the stunt world. Or she will be made a hero, which in my opinion she already is. With Sarah Jones's death last year being so high profile, Hollywood has actually begun to take responsibility for their actions with talent and crew.
Before Sarah Jones, Hollywood would write off injuries like they were nothing. Ask the world's nicest director John Landis.
Giving your life for 2001 seems much better than giving it up for Paul blart.
I am sorry to hear that bud. I injured my back when I was 18 in a trampoline accident by cracking two vertebrae in my lower back. I couldn't stand upright for more than 5 minutes before I was writhing in pain. It really really sucked but I was able to completely recover after wearing a back-brace 24/7 for just over a year. And here I am thinking that my injury was bad...
The eyeballs being in the eyelids still shows how fake it is. Eyeballs aren't attached to your face at all. You can literally pull your eyelids away from your eyeball, try it now, I will wait.
See how easy that was? Also, what coroner in their right mind would remove a face and place it on top of the corpse and then take a picture? This is faker than my wife's orgasms.
And sometimes modern medicine is complete garbage. It's great for injuries though.
When you think about it. Degloved .... De-Gloved. Sounds like the process of removing a glove. Add in the word Face into that... yup.
I wonder what she looks like at this moment.
Jimmy Fallon did this to his finger when he tripped and his wedding ring caught on the edge of table.
Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes.
We cant stop things from killing you fast but if it is slow we will prolong the suffering
Yes, technically, but there's no guarantee that you remove the pain or don't cause more pain. It wouldn't be something a doctor recommends doing, or performing honestly. It's just high risk, low reward if any reward.
Wow, you guys did the thing! From the thing!
my done what
Cause she was in peak physical condition. Check out her body. I'm sure average Joe would not survive that.
So how did this happen? I imagine that for stunts there are multiple overredundant controls set in place to limit these horrible near-worst-case scenarios. Her injuries..... sounds horrible. Hope she recovers well and quick.
Well that's the thing. You usually don't
Like the movie Face Off?
Well thats just speculation. Just because you break 5 bones doesn't mean her entire face has come off. Entire facial degloving is extremely rare. When skin is degloved the entire chunks comes off as one piece, the face has lots of "bits" compared to fingers, toes or other appendages so its easier to tear and stop the degloving.
Let's not forget that the stuntman Conway Wickliffe died during the filming of "The Dark Knight" because of unsafe working practices whilst performing a chase scene.
Holy shit. Is this one even real?
She was doing 50kph, which is enough with no helmet or any other gear.
Risky click of the day, here we gooooooooooooooo...
EDIT: It's safe.
For those wondering who Sarah Jones is:
Yeah, she looks about the same as .
Well, I think the most SFW and nightmare-free way to describe it is with this line from wikipedia.
It is named by analogy to the process of removing a glove.
So now just imagine that your face (or parts of it) are a glove.
I'm giving my future wife the NuvaRing.
It was funny, after the five seconds of sheer horror as you watch your mum peel her face off.
Man... I'm sorry, that sucks.
Can the nerves not be killed?
and a body like a slab of iron.
Ever taken a glove off?
Same thing, just with your skin.
We've learned nothing
I see all of you saying not to google it, but I'm gonna do it anyway.
I really hope she's taken care of
This is America, so there's a chance she and her family will be drained of all their money.
The Underworld series got horrible ratings and I love the shit out of watching those films.
Yep. A lifetime of chronic pain would be horrendous. Which people seem to be overlooking due to the gory nature of the degloving injury!
Can confirm. I am an average Joe and I wouldn't have survived that.
You should post this on today's dark joke reddit post. I laughed and now I regret it
Fuark! He ain't wrong https://instagram.com/p/57Kg0Vga_0/
They could just have "Honorary Recognition in Stunt Work" instead of "Most extreme stunt"
Never. Never driving a motorcycle. Nope.
yeah, my memory was vague enough that i couldn't remember if it was a real event or a work of fiction. so it was either a horrifying real life story or a super entertaining move/play/book/episode of Law and Order
"A wolf will chew off its own foot to survive" proceeds to break wrist and escape
Ohh Dexter... you were amazing
Let's not start to use the details of her tragedy as a soapbox for movie reviews.
Which is why a lot of crazy surgeries are done by old about to retire doctors who dgaf about their reputation anymore and are thus willing to roll the dice for the patient.
The director for the Sarah Jones death got 2 years in prison and 8 additional years of probation where he's not allowed to act as a director or be in charge of a film crew. Source.
You start throwing the people in charge into prison, and they'll start caring.
edit: too many damn years
How about we have a drink or two and we can find out. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Yep. I love practical effects, and a lot of impressive stunts can be done with proper attention to safety, but I'd rather enjoy my movie knowing that nobody was mutilated or died because the director didn't put the extra effort into crew safety. If the risk looks too high, either rework the shot or go with CGI.
Why did you have to say this. I never would have imagined that a penis could be degloved. You fucking philistine.
My brain just googled it and created a nightmarish animation that is playing over and over again in my head.
Yikes. I thought losing her thumb would've been the worst, but if she has one working thumb she can adapt. But chronic pain is a different monster. I really hope she's taken care of, and not just hung out to dry/forgotten like other injured stunt people often are.
Edit: somehow I missed the paralyzed arm, which will carry its own phantom sensations and pains. Fuck.
I don't think Nick Cage wanted his face off.
Yeah with those injuries I can't imagine her getting back into stunt work, whats she gonna do with one (functional) arm, no thumb, and a (presumably) fucked up face. I don't mean to sound insensitive but I really can't see her getting back into a normal lifestyle anytime soon, let alone doing stunt work.
She can make an awesome "What has one thumb and can't do a proper fonzie impression any more?" joke. So there's that.
And the worst part of not going back to a 100% functional life is not being able to do what you love anymore...
