"It's clear from the images shared with us by CNN that our game assets were appropriated and misused in promotions by third parties without our permission," Niantic, the makers of Pokémon Go, said in a statement provided to CNN.
TIL how to quickly get Niantic to communicate, just bring the Russians
Vladimir Putin comin' after my Pokedex.
Edit: Lol to this tweet.
"It is important to note that Pokémon GO, as a platform, was not and cannot be used to share information between users in the app so our platform was in no way being used."
We know, Niantic. We know we can't communicate with others to organize raids, events, etc......
"Niantic will consider our response as we learn more"
Coming soon: popups every 30 seconds asking "ARE YOU A RUSSIAN SPY?"
Yeah, they care about Vlad, but not about the spoofers in my town. FML.
Pokemon Go! to the polls
How do you know it's not the Russians who are spoofing all over the US, spreading hatred among the American people by having them accuse each other of spoofing?
You are fake news, lol
limited edition MAGA hat Pikachu coming soon.
The important thing to remember with these disinformation campaigns is that they're playing both sides, just to sow anger, chaos and potentially violence.
It seems like they were hoping that this would get some sort of viral campaign of people posting victim-named pokemon to social media, which they could then use to get the GGers and their ilk riled up. If people got into physical confrontations at gyms near the sites of these shootings, so much the better.
These people successfully convinced someone to shoot up a pizza place using similar tactics, so it's not out of the question.
Saw this on /sub/politics as well. Title is a bit misleading. They inserted themselves into community groups made online for pokemon go, not the actual application itself. Would not be surprised if some of the spoofer bots were russian however, as bot farms were in full force at the time.
Username checks out
What's next? Russians used Runescape?
I hardly believe anyone in this community participated in this ploy.
Welp, glad they blocked sharing of names in game.
I just got this notification on my ipad XD
This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 91%. (I'm a bot)
One Russian-linked campaign posing as part of the Black Lives Matter movement used Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr and Pokémon Go and even contacted some reporters in an effort to exploit racial tensions and sow discord among Americans, CNN has learned.
The Don't Shoot Us campaign - the title of which may have referenced the "Hands Up, Don't Shoot" slogan that became popular in the wake of the shooting of Michael Brown - used these platforms to highlight incidents of alleged police brutality, with what may have been the dual goal of galvanizing African Americans to protest and encouraging other Americans to view black activism as a rising threat.
Specifically, the Don't Shoot Us contest directed readers to go to find and train Pokémon near locations where alleged incidents of police brutality had taken place.
