[Stan Van Gundy] Athletes Who Protest Are Patriots

[Stan Van Gundy] Athletes Who Protest Are Patriots

Protest has nearly always been the catalyst for meaningful change. And it has always made people uncomfortable. This was true of the abolitionists, the women’s suffrage movement, the civil rights movement and the gay rights movement, all of which shined a bright and needed light on injustice, demanded that our country live up to its stated ideals and produced our most meaningful change. To be sure, they made people feel uncomfortable along the way, but those were the people who needed to feel uncomfortable. People should never be permitted to feel comfortable while trampling the rights of others.

To be sure, they made people feel uncomfortable along the way, but those were the people who needed to feel uncomfortable.

This is what gets me about the "keep politics out of sports, can't we just enjoy something" crowd.

Politics, especially racial politics, have always been in sports. Hell, the leagues started segregated. You just had the luxury of not having to think about it until now.

Cool related story about John Wooden and Bill Walton.

While at UCLA Walton got arrested at a protest of the Vietnam war. Wooden bailed Walton out of jail and on the car ride home said some of the classic "Thats not how you should protest" things and told Bill that the best way would be to write a letter.

That next morning Walton snuck into Wooden's office and stole some of his stationary and wrote a letter to the president had the entire team sign it and sent it to the president.

Shockingly, Wooden didn't like that either and made him run a lot.

The "keep politics out of sports" crowd is the worst. Racial equality and ending systematic discrimination shouldn't even be a political issue.

At the end of the day, a lot of people in this country just don't understand what it's like to not be white. Entrenched societal racism isn't a "political issue" for people who feel the repercussions of it every day, it's their life.

Why no love for Kyle Korver today on the front page? If I hadn't watched the game myself, I'd have never known he went HAM from downtown in the fourth to bring the Cavs back

That dude actually hit like 10 long bombs in no time and we're only talking about LeBron's insta?

Do you think we actually watch basketball?

All credit goes to LeBron. It's why Kyrie left.

MY SCOUTS TELL ME INFO

The only guys on the Cavs right now with chemistry are LeBron and Korver. He looks like the only guy who LeBron knows where he'll be on the court at all times

The mask should have a map on it like with oceans and shit

Fuck me.

Green does look good on him

Can we appreciate how fucking big time Korver has been so far?

Can we appreciate how fucking big time Korver has been so far?

I dont know how many times he's saved the Cavs ass this season. Big shots after big shots. He's sparked so many Cavs runs off the bench That guy can't fucking miss, shooting 47% on 3s. His eFG % is 69% (holy shit) and he's been working very hard on defense. He's been amazing, and it's underappreciated.

No. Fuck Kyle Korver. Now and forever. It is the first thing I will whisper in the ear of my new born son, and the last thing I'll mutter as I shuffle off this accursed earth.

Korver single-handedly beat us. So frustrating to watch your team battle so hard just to watch him chop a couple threes and ruin your night like it's nothing.

You jest, but if he'd made that 3 right before KD's dagger in game 3, we would've lost the game and maybe the series.

Edit: watch the replay.

No wonder GSW is so good they have like 3 Korvers.

NBA teams and fans are going to hate embiid so much in the near future. Once the sixers start actually contending down the road people will think embiid is insufferable. I️ wouldn’t have it any other way. TTP

I talk a lot of shit and I haven't even played 1 NBA game

Well when the guy makes a dirty play on you and youre asked about it what should he say?

Embiid is more likeable than draymond in my opinion. Until embiid kicks Adams twice in the nuts I'll like him.

[James] “You’re welcome.. 👑 of NY”

[James] “You’re welcome.. 👑 of NY”

LeBron literally doesn't give a shit any more. I way prefer no shit LeBron than corny LeBron.

Lmao LeBron just shit on all of New York

Michael Rapaport on suicide watch.

Gives no fucks LeBron > Miami With Chemistry Headband LeBron > Chasedown Block LeBron > Miami Villain LeBron > Cleveland Doitmyself LeBron > Wholesome LeBron

[Ben Falk] How to Get a Job in the NBA - lessons from my story and experience working for teams

[Ben Falk] How to Get a Job in the NBA - lessons from my story and experience working for teams

I get this question so much, I thought I'd write a full article with my story and my advice. Happy to answer any questions anyone has on this!

Great content Ben, but the list excludes a fourth method, which is to be born the son or daughter of an NBA owner

It's very important how analyses are communicated to anyone: GMs, coaches or players. It has to be done with the listener in mind, with the goal in mind, and through the proper channels.

In Portland, for example, I would never go directly to a player with stats unless they sought me out. My job was to talk to the coaching staff. If they agreed, they could implement the results of what we said into their coaching. It might never seem to players like "advanced stats".

A simple example: if our coaching staff now looked at defensive points per possession instead of defensive points per game, that is an advanced stat. But they might just say to the players: our defense has been much better over the last 10 games. Or they might say: we ranked 20th heading into the last 10 games, but over the last 10 we've ranked 7th. Neither of these trigger any kind of backlash.

So focusing on how the information works its way through the organization is very important.

Great read, especially for someone who's kinda curious about working in an FO (I have no project, so I should probably change that.)

The NBA life is not for everyone. You have to truly love the work, every day. Because when you’re starting out, the pay is not great, the hours are rough, and organizations sometimes have frustrating workplace dynamics. The value of actually working for an NBA team has to outweigh all of that.

This leads me to what may be a silly question. I remember reading an article (It may have been by a Grantland alum or 538) that discussed how most players find analytics to be trivial or flat out disrespectful, and sometimes they would show this in kind to the analytics team. Assuming that advance analytics will play a bigger part in NBA wheeling and dealing, do you see a scenario where a star player's or a coach's attitude towards stats harms an FO?
