[XLN] The Tokens of Ixalan

[XLN] The Tokens of Ixalan

To play Magic...?

Kinda lame that the fnm two-sided tokens have the same art as the tokens in packs.

No Jace ult token? Well, that was a little far-fetched anyway.

In most cases no, although you could argue they just printed a million of copy effect tokens for embalm and eternalize

So the special double face tokens for FNM have exactly the same art as the tokens you find in each pack, well this is... unexpected. I do understand the reasoning of changing the FNM rewards, but at least make those tokens unique c'mon...

And of course no Jace copies... That is unexpected too, it would have been very sweet.

It's worth noting what sets those apart from other copy effects. Wizards does not print tokens with mana costs, because it'd be confusing, so to be able to print accurate Embalm/Eternalize tokens, they had to make Embalm/Eternalize specify that the tokens do not have mana costs.

Out of curiosity, have there ever been tokens for copy effects?

Seven unique tokens this time, ten total. Four are variants of a single token.
1/1 White Vampire with Lifelink
2/2 Blue Illusion with "When this creature becomes the target of a spell, sacrifice it."
1/1 Blue Merfolk with Hexproof
2/2 Black Pirate with Menace
3/3 Green Dinosaur with Trample
0/2 Green Plant with Defender
Dinosaur-themed Treasure
Vampire-themed Treasure
Merfolk-themed Treasure
Pirate-themed Treasure

The draw isn't unique art, it's that it's foil. /S

I love how the pirate-treasure card has a rolled-up map in it, as if, "Yarr, knowledge be important, put the U into UB a Pirate!". Also, there's a gun at the left edge of the chest.. Thought those got phased out after Portal 2nd Age.

I wasn't saying it was inaccurate, it's just that MaRo has stated before that guns aren't really compatible with MTGs universe. I'm personally fine with pirates having little flint-lock pistols and the like, it certainly feels pirate'y.

They made token copies of all the embalm and eternalize creatures, but unlike most copy effects those actually drop their mana cost. They will probably never print a copy token of anything that keeps the mana cost.

The Embalm and Eternalize tokens for Amonkhet were an exception. Normally "Clone Tokens" aren't made because Mana Cost is a copiable value. This would cause them yo have to print tokens with a mana cost on them, which can and will confuse players. How would you like to open a pack, see a "1UU" mana cost on the back card, then realize that you just opened a token and not actually Jace?

These tokens aren't double sided. I think you're thinking of the FNM promo tokens.

Those treasures are for the huatl faction, aka the dinosaur worshippers. They were actually the main focus instead of the dinosaur until rnd realized that dinosaurs are way cooler.

Deeproot Waters, 2U Enchantment. Makes the token when you cast a merfolk spell.

Very few different tokens in this set.

I'm sure we'll get some Jace PW tokens, because otherwise it'll get really hard to track three of the same PW.

We've seen the full token list, and Jace isn't on it.

If they wanted to print Jace tokens, they would have had Jace's ability specify that the tokens have no mana cost, so they could print accurate tokens without violating the "tokens can't be printed with mana costs" rule. They didn't.

Simple guns with triggers are as old as the mid 15th century, and cannons are about a century older (as in European cannons, Chinese cannons predate the European variety by a couple hundred years), so it's not as far off historically speaking as many think.

I know the merfolk-themed treasure is probably jade, but all I can see is cabbage.

Can you imagine the revolt in kaladesh with AK47s?

Just buy 10 or 12 Jaces, it will only cost you around 180 bucks./s

They also change colors in many cases.

Also, those tokens were named creature.

Sure we had a 6/6 Wurm, but we also had things like [[Aven Wind Guide]].

Yeah ok, double face foil is nice, but still it is a bummer...
