Months before the Trump administration announced the creation of a controversial commission to examine the country’s voting systems, one future commissioner sent an email that was forwarded to Attorney General Jeff Sessions recommending that the commission exclude Democrats and “mainstream Republican officials and/or academics.”
The email was sent on February 22 by Hans von Spakovsky of the Heritage Foundation, a former Justice Department official in the George W. Bush administration known for his efforts to impose new restrictions on voting. In it, von Spakovsky warned that Democrats would get in the way of efforts to crack down on voter fraud—an issue that commissioners have sought to portray as a major threat, but which in reality is exceedingly rare.
They (the fraudulent commission) know their end goal and don't want silly things like "facts" or "the constitution" to get in their way.
recommending that the commission exclude Democrats and “mainstream Republican officials and/or academics.
This is all so cartoonishly, absurdly authoritarian that I sometimes seriously have trouble recognizing that this is actually the world I live in.
Democrats would get in the way of efforts to crack down on voter fraud increase voter suppression and gerrymandering.
"Here's the verdict, now go find me evidence and a defendant!"
The commission wants to turn the United States into a 1 party country like North Korea where only loyal party members (only Republicans) can vote.
Not only that, but a third of our country is perfectly okay with it.
What you can't find any?
Just make something up.
This is kinda why I am a huge fan of militant democracy. It is a democracy that is really aggressive about defending itself, so rules and regulations are established to prevent those who wish to abolish the democractic and/or republican order for coming to power. It's a damn shame that Germany is really the only democracy like this.
They don't like facts and proof, plain and simple.
And one of the other 1/3 is asleep at the wheel :(
Why is there such distrust and dislike for "academics" from the right?
Well there's this story I heard from a German golfer who was trying to illegally vote but wasn't allowed to, regarding some Mexican looking people who were allowed to vote because they had all the proper identification and registration...
I assume because academics are educated, and that's not something the right likes very much.
"They can show me those fancy statistics all day, but they don't know what it's REALLY like in the world."
It's pretty telling that Republicans' bar for policy research qualifications is "do they already unequivocally believe the asinine shit we're spouting?"
I always go back and forth on who I'm more upset with... the people that always vote for the GOP or the people that never vote. Sure, the GOP voters believe in stupid or awful things. But at least they care about it enough to bother voting.
That golfer story was just one more example of Trump pulling a bunch bullshit out of his ass.
I'm becoming a big fan of Germany in the political sense. They really seem to have their shit together. Oh and environmentally too. I wonder if they have absurd games censorship like Australia does...
Well, the last time democracy failed in Germany, nearly ten per cent of the country was killed in the most horrific war of all time, a war which ended with the country being carved in two and occupied by the world's two major empires for the next half century.
Can't think of an inoculation against autocracy and fascism that'd be any stronger than that.
Because the academics tend to disagree with what they know in their gut to be correct, so they must have an agenda.
It's a hard-right, fascist takeover. They're not going to be stopped until they're forced to stop.
Well there goes any claim at impartiality.
The best bet is having the big states like California to tell this guy to go fuck himself.
You guys know those evil liberal college students?! Let's claim it would be really easy for them to vote twice, once at their college address and once at their parents' address. Even though it isn't at all.
And you know how registered voters die every day?! Let's claim that them not being removed from registered voter lists immediately means that Democrats are having people vote pretending to be them.
Because reality and facts have a well known liberal bias.
