Trump calls Dems who didn't clap during State of the Union 'treasonous' and 'un-American'

While not treasonous, the republicans didn't clap for Obama either. Washington warned us about a two party system..now here we are

And here I am thinking that dissent for authority was an American pastime. Guess I was wrong, sorry King George!

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."

-Theodore Roosevelt

Senator Duckworth had the best response: http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/372452-duckworth-fires-back-at-trump-i-swore-an-oath-to-the-co...

As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron. --H.L. Mencken

The difference is, Obama didn't call it treason. He just took everyone's abuse.

His politics aside, nobody who represents the American people should be this asinine when he opens his mouth.

Edit: many of the replies are missing the point.

I am not outraged, offended, or even angry. In fact, I pity Trump; he has been in a position to say whatever he wants and get whatever he wants for his entire life. And now people are angry that he hasn't changed on a dime when he became president.

So, when he says things like this that can be misunderstood or taken the wrong way (which he does almost daily it seems) it doesn't necessarily mean he is at fault, or in the wrong.

It does mean that he is a terrible communicator. I'd be amazed If anyone disagrees. The number one job of the president is to represent the American people, and Trump can't go a week without angering someone with just his words alone, either within the US or other countries, often our allies. This indicates that he cannot communicate effectively. And why would he? He hasn't had to his whole life.

And if you think that everyone is getting upset over nothing then you need to ask a simple question: do you think it is more likely that over 50% of Americans and the vast majority of the world suddenly became hyper sensitive wussies in the last couple years, or is it more likely that Trump is a terrible communicator?

So, not clapping is treason...but spending eight years telling us the sitting president is some kind of Kenyan Muslim Manchurian candidate is... patriotic?

Wonder what Trump would have said if some douchebag yelled "you lie" during his speech.

One of the most important traits for a president is good temperament, and Obama was a rare example of it.

If you didn't click:

We don't live in a dictatorship or a monarchy. I swore an oath—in the military and in the Senate—to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, not to mindlessly cater to the whims of Cadet Bone Spurs and clap when he demands I clap

I'd love a video showing a democrat not clapping for Trump then switch to a republican not calling for Obama and just keep switching between.

The Dems didn't need to clap....Trump was clapping enough for everyone.

Her tweet

What about that jackass congressjerk yelling "you lie!" at Obama?

Even a racist clock is right twice a day.

You Tory bastard!

Obama didn't call it treason because it's ridiculous to do so.

And he's been called weak for that. By the same people who call Trum strong.

I honestly couldn't believe that. He was so proud of himself, like the big boy he is, yes he is, yes, yes he is.

Well, you see, you have to be talking about a whole person for it to be treason, not 3/5ths of one.

Aka I’m a narcissist, how dare you not stroke my fragile ego.

Edit: If you’re going to PM me homophobic shit over my post history, at least be original please. 🙃

Hell, nobody at all should be this asinine while talking.

People confuse a defensive response to insecurity with strength.

He also thought physics and math were bullshit and was even more racist than usual for his time, so, yknow, don't put too much stock in him.

Mark my words she will be a name in 2019-2020. She has done everything to rise in the ranks in Illinois’ strong Democratic Party. She has a lot of intangibles (like say, being a minority liberal woman who is also a Purple Heart recipient and an Iraq War hero) and if she can present an agreeable platform, there will be lots of voters on the left pushing for her to be president.

Edit: all these Thailand comments—go see how that worked out against Mark Kirk. Tammy’s father was a serviceman and she is a natural born citizen as far as anyone else can tell. Don’t see the difference between her and McCain/Cruz

Cadet Bone Spurs

Worst thing about this?

/r_Donald people are going to screaming about how he's right and how we should start worshiping him as a god-emperor.

... Or yelling "You take cash!" to a politician.

Holy shit, reading more about this lady, what a badass

"It’s very selfish," he adds.

Well if that isn't the orange calling the orange orange.

Imagine the uproar from the right if Obama had said that. What a bunch of hypocrites

I think everyone should tweet this at Trump at least once a day until his term is up.

I feel like yelling " you lie ! " at a politician is like yelling " You take cash! " to a stripper...

Edit * I feel really bad that my highest rated comment is about Trump... thanks I guess.

Going to be? I think you mean "Have been for a while now."

Rep. Joe Wilson (R) of SC shouted "You lie!" at the president during a joint session of Congress outlining the ACA plan. Wilson supposedly believed that HR 3200 would provide healthcare benefits to illegal immigrants (it doesn't). He later apologized to Obama.

"Please Clap"

-Jeb Bush

-Donald Trump

She has all of the virtues which Trump lacks, is a firebrand who fights for what she believes in, and is a quick wit. She is likely the strongest prospective Democratic candidate.

Who is this prophet I have never heard of?

His posture during those moments cracked me up. Stiff as a board, head held high...too high...He really thinks he is hot shit.

We should see if they'll take us back. I'm willing to compromise on the whole taxation without representation issue now. It's clear we can't figure it out so let's just trust the fair governance of The Crown. God Save the Queen

Exactly. Trump's fucking upset for people not giving him a standing ovation while Obama had to suffer through heckling. Fuck this guy.

Donald Trump is now moderator of /sub/pyongyang

Didn’t a Republican interrupt and shout that Obama was a liar during his one of the SOTU speeches? Am I remembering that correctly?

Utilizing your constitutional rights is not treason or un-American. However, it's un-American to verbally attack people for utilizing those rights.

When Jeb asked for applause he was annihilated but the messiah can call it treason and his fox and friends will agree.

It should be repeated that Senator Duckworth is a combat veteran who lost both legs in Iraq, so she definitely has license to call him that.

"You're with us, or you're with the terrorists".

They get me a little over half the time.

Most certainly not. I'm more than willing to return to the status quo. The French and Indian War has been paid off for a while now so the main sticking point is behind us. Plus who were we to complain about being taxed for that? The Crown fought to protect us from becoming French subjects. We should've been happy to foot the bill a bit.

Edit: I've been a redditor for four years. Never been gilded before. Here's my obligatory "Thank you for the Gold kind stranger"

Seriously this is awesome thanks

Yes, kinky too. Loves doing it in wheat fields.

Reminds me of the line from Colbert several months ago after some random Trump screw up.

"You know, Trump is just the worst person t... ...actually, that's it. That's the end of my sentence right there."

It is shocking how strongly this president values the appearance of success over any substantive measurements of success. He needs to show the map with all the red counties because it gives the appearance that the majority of Americans voted for him. He needs to have the biggest crowds, the highest ratings, the most people clapping at his speeches. He won’t go to London if there are protesters. He clearly has a compulsive need to shut down the Russia investigation, and the crazy thing is I don’t think it’s because he thinks he’s guilty. I think it’s because it’s this perpetual buzzing in the back of his head that as long as the investigation is going on, it doesn’t look like he’s won yet (and secondarily he’s probably afraid it will uncover his shady business practices and money issues from before his campaign.) The irony here is that he might perjure himself of cross a clear line of Obstruction of Justice trying to shut down an investigation when, in his head, he was “just” trying to do PR damage control.

She is.

As an Illinois Resident, the ads against her during her election were fucking horrible.

Her ads : "Here is all this great stuff I have done."

Her opponent (Mark Kirk): "This wheelchair bound legless veteran hates all veterans for 'reaspns'."

And they both ran almost every commercial break on ever local channel.

For a bit more clarity. I don't recall any adds from Duckworth disparaging Mark Kirk, and I don't recall any Mark Kirk ads that were not positioning Duckworth as a "shitty person who hates vets".

All other issues and parties aside, that alone made me want to support Duckworth more.

Still pretty weird when it shouts the n word instead of cuckoo

It's amazing they elect these draft dodgers and silver spoon assholes and believe they're tough, self made individuals because they said they were. I mean you can go through hoops for all kinds of conspiracy Alex Jones bullshit but you get Hoodwinked by a guy just saying "I love america and boot straps."? It's fucking unreal.

I keep hearing about this Tory chick. Is she hot or something?

"Only a Sith deals in absolutes."

Remember when an Iraqi journalist threw a shoe at a president?

I don't know why I thought of that. Didn't mean to shoehorn it into this discussion.

...

Someone throw a damn shoe at this president.

Do you feel like you've been fairly represented in recent tax issues anyway?

ITT: People focused on the literal equation of dissenting opinion with treason and not focusing on the attempt to diminish the meaning of the word "treasonous" after it was used to describe the Trump Tower meeting.

It's "Fake News" all over again, he doesn't like a word used against him so he appropriates it and attempts to destroy the word itself. It's the lie within the lie that we should be looking at.

"Treasonous!"

"I'm not sure this word means what you think it does..."

Was I the only one weirded out when the Republicans started chanting USA? That wasn't normal was it?

Donald Trump is:

A weak man's ideal of a strong man.

A dumb man's ideal of a smart man.

A failure's ideal of a success.

Exactly, calling this treason is just a cop out in my opinion.

"Oh someone doesn't agree with me! It can't be that! It can't be that people have more than one view! They're committing treason! "

However obviously in this case it just seems like he's saying that to make people fear their way into supporting him. This is something dictators do.

When you are trying to sell your bullshit, Nationalism works really well.

How long before Trump calls her a coward with "no leg to stand on" and thinks it's funny?

I give it a week tops

My favorite snippet from her Wikipedia:

Duckworth participated in the 2016 Chris Murphy gun control filibuster. During the sit-in, Duckworth hid her mobile phone in her prosthetic leg to avoid it being taken away from her since taking pictures and recording on the House floor is against policy.[65]

It's hilarious and awesome. Knowing her personal story and looking at some of her positions, that is definitely a person I would vote for for president.

Best of all she won't be pushing 80 fucking years old like Trump, Hillary, and Bernie.

80 is entirely too fucking old to hold the highest position in the nation for 4 years.

You must clap for the people I say you must clap for. THAT is the freedom of America.

He wouldn't know what treason is even if it hit him over the head.

Don't take my kindness as weakness

3/5ths jokes always fucking get me

And he said it in a hilarious self-deprecating way. Poor Jeb can't catch a break

What if Treason pissed on him in a Russian hotel room?

Holy fuck how are our own politicians expected to serve the public when they don't even understand their own laws much less understand the struggles their constituents actually have.

These days it's just "cuck!"

He's a stable genius, like very smart, and treasonous is short for Treasonosaurus Rex, which is the only dinosaur that couldn't clap.

"It's treason then"

6'2, an even more daunting feat.

Trump's doctors have said 6'3, but at his weight, that single inch is the difference between "overweight" and "obese"

Easier to add an inch on paper than to put down the fish fillets and TV remote, apparently.

*not feet.

footage from the debate

Didn't Mark Kirk also try to lowkey call her out as an immigrant by sarcastically saying something like, "I didn't know your parents came to this country to fight for George Washington" without realizing she actually is in the "Daughters of the American Revolution" because her father's side of the family did fight in the American Revolution?

EDIT: just looked it up, yup. Here's the

After spending a lot of time on /sub/asktrumpsupporters and /sub/askthe_donald, I can definitely say that ignorance and hatred are the main reasons.

These people hate, they hate so much that they're ready to destroy everything so that the ones they hate get it bad, even if it means they get it even worse.

They also have no idea how anything works. During the campaign, I was appalled when Trump suggested he'd overturn SCOTUS decision, have Mexico pay for the wall or ban muslims. I knew for a fact that all of this was 100% constitutionally or practically impossible, but there they were, cheering for literal pipe dreams, hatred fuelled, ignorant dreams.

There is nothing else, there can be nothing else, as ignoring the very fabric of reality cannot come from anything else than sheer ignorance, or wilful ignorance, induced by a very strong sentiment, and it certainly isn't unconditional love.

2 Timothy 4:3.

I'm especially fond of how one translation renders the verse: "For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine and accurate instruction [that challenges them with God’s truth]; but wanting to have their ears tickled [with something pleasing], they will accumulate for themselves [many] teachers [one after another, chosen] to satisfy their own desires and to support the errors they hold"

Sure, it takes a bit of liberty with the explanatory insertions... But boy, it sure does help to drive the point home.

Edit: For the record, I don't endorse either political party. Both of them clearly espouse doctrines that violate Bible principles. But only one of them has the audacity to try to use the Bible to justify their hypocrisy. That infuriates me.

It's more the opposite; "I'm an asshole to everyone and since no one punches me in the jaw, that means I'm strong"

Please clap

How tall is he? 5'9"?!DIDN'T KNOW THEY STACKED SHIT THAT HIGH!

Mark your calendar boys, it is on this day that I now refer to Trump as Cadet Bone Spurs.

I am now a huge fan of Senator Duckworth. Holy shit.

That’s not even the worse part... Only tin pot dictators call political opponents “treasonous”

We don't live in a dictatorship or a monarchy. I swore an oath—in the military and in the Senate—to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, not to mindlessly cater to the whims of Cadet Bone Spurs and clap when he demands I clap

Oh my God, absolutely wrecked. The only recourse Cadet Bone Spurs McDraftdodge has for this one is to go full ad hominem and attack the retired Lieutenant Colonel as a "nasty woman". He certainly can't counter her skewering directly.

Honestly, /r_Donald is probably the only group of poeple too stupid to realize that the whole god emperor meme is in no way positive...

I can see trumps face now. Probably warming up those twitter fingers as we speak.

After reading more about her, she would definitely have my vote.

Good point.

Only thing missing now is the death threats because I dared to slander their god.

Treason? I thought her name was Mercedes

He's using it to discredit the word. It's very intentional.

Wow, didn't even know before this post that she lost her legs. Going to her site, it doesn't seem like she plasters that and plays the victim card or looks for sympathy at all. Respect.

Obama had the best comeback for the GOP this one time...

"suffer"

. I feel like he took it in stride, and took it like a man who understands how politics works.

He could be married to her, shit talk her in public, then rawdog a porn star and his base wouldn't care

She took a fucking RPG to the legs while flying a helicopter in combat for the U.S. military.

federally, but his words mean nothing
