Even more surprisingly, Abe Lincoln was named after the Simpsons character.
He also named many characters after streets in Portland, where he is from. Flanders, Lovejoy, Terwiliger...
The Simpsons has been on so long I almost believed this.
Just learned this on Good Job Brain! recently. Some additional trivia: Bart, Lisa, and Maggie don't have actual hair because Matt sketched all of the characters within a few minutes on a napkin, moments before his meeting to pitch his idea.
Edit: so since people like this, let's do some more!
Matt Groenings original pitch was for a comic about a rabbit called Life in Hell. He didn't want to risk his "big success" with a TV show. So he rushed to create The Simpsons.
Lincoln died 152 years ago and the Simpsons just finished their 28th season which means that the Simpsons have existed for 18.4 % of the time that has passed since Lincoln's death.
What about Nahasapeemapetilon Street?
Abe isn't the most loving character. Perhaps it would feel like a dishonor to his grandfather.
DID I STUTTER
Actually a hidden twist was originally going to be that Marge was in fact a Life in Hell rabbit (with her ears hidden in her hair). They later scrubbed this for the show, but if you play the arcade game, when Marge is electrocuted, you can see her hidden ears.
I'LL PUT YOU IN A GRAVEYARD
Why didn't he want to name Abe after his own grandfather?
Tbh most of the Simpson characters aren't exactly that loving either
I'm from Portland and I've never seen Apu street...
I don't expect anyone to read this comment, or anyone to believe me, but if this wasn't spooky enough (the writers naming him Abe etc) the exact moment I stopped reading this thread and put my phone in my pocket and stood up, my mother, who was doing a crossword puzzle, saw me and asked me, "what's the name of Grandpa Simpson?".
Now she had no idea what I had been reading about, but the timing was absolutely incredible. I had literally JUST stopped reading about how they named him Abe.
I'm going to need some time to think about this.
Edit: photo as some kind of proof:
well this is a shitty gimmick account
Did we just witness a bot fight
I don't have anything against matt groenings family
Maybe he doesn't like his family
A hipster street in Portland
It's pretty obscure, I'm not surprised you haven't heart of it
He kinda looks like an older Milhouse.
I like this one http://imgur.com/a/bZa6A
Initially the meeting was about adapting his comic strip Life is Hell but he feared if the show didn't take off he'd lose the rights to his characters so he quickly came up with the rough design while in the waiting room. Additional fact: it was the strip that initially piqued James L. Brook's interest in the comic into a show.
EDIT A lot of this is detailed in the documentary My Wasted Life
Margerie is marge
Bartholomew is bart
Elizabeth is lisa
Margret is maggie
Abraham is abe
Homer is homer
Santa's Little Helper is santos l. halper
Snowball II is because the first one died
And Seymour Skimmer is arman tanzarian
Rangeo Matt Groening 🎶
And Seymour Skimmer is arman tanzarian
We agreed to never speak of this again
Those Life in Hell books were excellent. You sometimes see Bongo references in the show..eg Maggie has a stuffed animal Bongo in her crib.
I've watched the Simpsons since Ullman and used to read Life is Hell in the Village Voice - I always wondered what that was under her hair. Thanks!
Are you a bot or just really dedicated
Yeah, it's not something the hipsters will tell you
Even more surprisingly, the Biblical Abraham was named after the President.
Who does though
My first thought was he wanted to be free to kill off Homers father, and killing your own grandpa in a tv show feels baaad
Ooh a lesson in not changing history from Mr. "I'm-my-own-grandpa"
It's also his middle name.
Well this was fun
The universe needed OP to make this post, and for you to read this thread, so your ma could finish her crossword
Not from the mainstream
Is it possible to learn this name?
Yes, it's a Boyhood parody that shows vignettes about Bart growing up, focusing on his resentful relationship with Homer. Grampa dies when Bart is 15, and he feels like he's lost the only member of his family he could relate to. He angrily confronts Homer about why they have had such a bad relationship despite being so similar in many ways, and Homer admits that becoming a father so young represented an end to his childhood, then realises that his resentment of this has tainted his own son's childhood. It's pretty touching and tragic.
TIL Bart's full name is Bartholomew JoJo "Bart" Simpson, making The Simpson's the most Bizarre Adventure yet.
I wonder if they'll ever let grandpa die?
To be fair, every human is a dick at least sometimes
His mother's name is Maggie, I think.
I still remember playing the arcade game and fighting off tons of Bongo's
"Homer Simpson, you're under arrest for the murders of Moe Szylak, and Apu Nahasa-pasa-... uh, just Moe."
Flanders exists in Northeast, so people add a D to the NE Flanders sign all the time.
Quimby, Burns (Burnside)...
There are some alternate timeline episodes where he does. Most recently, "Barthood".
More Groening fun facts -
He never wrote an episode of the show. (EDIT: HE WROTE ONE EPISODE BY HIMSELF)
Sam Simon redrew the characters to the designs we think of today.
On commentaries and oral histories he seems universally looked down on by all writers and producers of the show.
Before they stopped letting him drop into the writers room, he wanted Marge to let her hair down in an episode to reveal bunny ears.
its urban planning then
My dad went to community college with him! Said he was a bit of a dick actually...
Matt Groening looks like alternate reality goodguy Steve Bannon
Lisa brings it up later once to get Skinner to bugger off. Something like simply saying "What's it matter to you, Arman?" and he's all "Carry on then."
The gangs all here guys
"Don't believe everything you read on the internet."
It is, and it's one of the best episodes in years.
Bongo is what? Bongo has what? I NEED TO KNOW!
The Simpsons requires you suspend disbelief on more than one occasion.
Apu's last name "Nahasapeemapetilon" was actually a slightly modified surname of a person Matt went to college with.
It's a shame I filled my brain with Simpsons trivia instead of useful information.
It was on before the current millennium even started! And a millennium is 1000 years!! The Simpsons is old school!
Don't really watch the Simpsons anymore, but please tell me that this is a parody of the film Boyhood
TIL Albert Einstein was a firefighter during 24/7.
Mr. Burns is probably named after cartoonist Charles Burns, who was a college classmate of his and a pretty famous cartoonist in his own right (source: used to know his family). "Montgomery" comes from a Portland landmark though.
Some say he is named after Charles Foster Kane from Citizen Kane, but I think a fan just made that guess at some point because of the similarities and it stuck.
I'll take the chance to say that Charles Burns is AWESOME and you should definitely check out his work. Particularly Black Hole.
I used to live on Lovejoy St in Portland. I called it Rev Lovejoy St and laughed to myself everytime I'd say it to a cab driver.
That's like how I was surprised that Bill Burr's father is still alive, because I didn't think he'd make a character like Frank Murphy based on his father while he was still alive.
Stupid sexy Flanders....
I call shenanigans, I saw him kill vampires not to long ago.
Nobody likes Milhouse!
I refuse to honor The Principal and the Pauper. It doesn't exist.
The difference is, in terms of British history the Victorian era is considered very recent.
Why would her ears be made of bone the fuck
that abraham lincoln's name? Albert Einstein
His dad doesn't have Netflix
Is that where Marge comes from?
Username really checks out
Krusty's name was inspired by a local clown called Rusty Nails.
It is not pronounced pick-weed you maniac.
Can confirm, i am ops dad and also a dick.
PS: son i never loved you
The Simpsons has been on 13.5% of the years since Lincoln was born in 1809 (28/208) and he died at 56. It follows that there is a 1 - [(1-.135)56] = 99.97% chance it was on the air for at least one season when he was alive. So he probably caught an episode or two.
Everything is coming up thrillho
Another little factoid about a Simpsons character: Homer's mother "Mona Simpson" was named after Steve Jobs' sister, who also happened to be called Mona Simpson before she married Richard Apel - a writer on the show.
I went to Evergreen State College (Evergreen Terrace) and there was an incredibly sweet girl in one of my classes who was so quiet up until the day we were discussing the Simpsons -- she piped up and said, "if you want, my Uncle Matt can probably talk to our class". Turns out her mom is Lisa Groening and her dad is Craig Bartlett, the creator of "Hey Arnold!". We were floored and got to meet both Matt and Craig, which was the highlight of the semester for all of us.
Apu on the streets, Apu in the sheets, but never in the loo
I feel like they somehow could've known that.
LilymonX likes Milhouse.
I mean, while that's true, Abraham Lincoln died in 1865 regardless of the age of the US.
Queen Victoria died in 1901, but you may have a few angry Brits on your hands if you implied the UK didn't have much history because of that.
Little do people know that Donald Trump was actually named after Abe Lincoln. Their names look nothing alike, but he was named after Abe Lincoln was.
There are universities in the US older than the US.
It's a far better episode than any made in the last ten seasons...
That's my problem with the Simpsons now. I watched like 6 episodes in a row for thanksgiving at my parents house and they were all so maudlin and depressing. 5 of them were set in the future and none of the characters were happy. The 6th opened with Homer tickling Bart at a baseball game on the jumbo ton and making him wet his pants in front of thousands of people. It was just awful.

What about Nahasapeemapetilon Street?
It's actually teerts nolitepameepasahan
