The milky way over the racetrack playa in Death Valley National Park, California [OC][635x950]

The pioneers used to ride these bad boys for miles

Not to be all earthporn-starter-pack-y, but it takes quite a while to get to this location, because it’s in the middle of nowhere after a long paved road, and then a long unpaved road made of jagged rocks. I rented a jeep to get here, and after driving the entire paved road section, realized I forgot my wide angle lens in the car. I hauled ass 46 miles back to the car, got my lens, and drove 46 smooth miles and then 26 more slow, bumpy miles to the racetrack. By my count that’s a total of 164 total miles I spent just getting here! I somehow found this spot later that night in the pitch black. I’ve learned a lot of lessons since then!

This is a blend of two photos taken one after another - one is a 5 minute exposure for the ground and one is a 30 second exposure for the sky.

Thanks for looking!

Captured: February 2015 Camera: Nikon D610 Lens: Nikon 16-35 f/4 Settings (sky exposure): ISO3200, 16mm f/4, 30 sec Settings (ground exposure): ISO1600, 16mm, f/4, 300 sec
lol he literally brightened a stripe of the sky diagonally where the milky way is. Then he colorized the entire sky blue. How you're the only one mentioning it is beyond me. The sad thing is that he probably has some decent RAW photos on his card and he just totally fucked up the editing.

EDIT: He probably could have something like this: https://imgur.com/RCGlza7 but just...didn't

Did you do some weird brush adjustments in lightroom? The exposure and color between the milkyway and rest of the sky is WAY off.

The first thing I thought of lmao

Also, for the love of god/science and all that is holy, please don't drive on the racetrack!

Where is this from?

Honestly I'm amazed this picture got on /sub/all and is even gilded. Doesn't look natural at all and totally not earth porn material. Low quality and really bad editing. I also would love to see the RAW files.

That's my opinion of course, if there is someone who likes it, nothing wrong with that.

Dear God! Such a poor Photoshop job. Not only there is no Milky Way in the sky where he is shooting, he has probably shot the sky completely elsewhere and has composited it on top of the mountains rather poorly. Anyone who has shot astrophotography for even a little while can tell you that its a composite and the sky was shot much higher than shown here.

I thought /sub/earthporn had much stricter quality standards.

Yeah that's way more beautiful and natural. Good work.

/u/BrentGoesOutside can you give us the RAW files? Even with a watermark on it, no problem.

I love a good night shot, but your foreground should never be brighter than the night sky.

I can't see a picture of this place without thinking of those vandals. Did you see any sign of the tire marks? I hope those people went to prison for at least a few months

Yeah I always check the comments section to see if there are other photographers who notice the things I do

a no-photoshop rule

While I agree that this isn't necessarily the best-edited, a "no-photoshop rule" would be absolutely meaningless. RAW files are flat and dull, and need enhancement. If you just take the photo in JPG mode in the camera, the camera is making its own decisions regarding adjustment curves, saturation, etc. So it's just like Photoshop that you don't control.

"Unedited" photos aren't good. Even photojournalists, who have an exacting standard of ethics regarding their editing, adjust global curves. If you want to talk about a rule like that, fine, but a blanket "no photoshop rule" is retarded.

Fun fact: that episode is 18 years old this year (originally aired on August 14, 1999).

Krusty Krab Pizza is old enough to buy cigarettes.

Not to be negative, but this is closer to a painting than reality. You made a composite and then completely blew out th Milky Way. This view of the MW points away from the galactic center and out towards the edge of the spiral arms and into intergalactic space. All of this is to say, you took the sparsest, least-populated portion of the Milky way and overexposed it to make it look fake.

I only bring this up because you posted in Earthporn, which the foreground is perfect for but the background sky is not. This would have been a perfect photo for the sub if you didn't make a composite and then make artful decisions when editing. You have Orion and Bernard's Loop in this photo, which would have made for a great background. Instead, you added a radial filter or other local adjustments to overexpose a quiet part of the MW. Again, only a criticism in this sub.

It’s not just a boulder, it’s a rock!

That looks way better in my opinion anyways. This is pretty awful and am surprised it's got 11k upvotes.

gasp SQUIDWARD.

Yes and no, they destroyed it by driving a fucking pickup across it.

Didn't a group of people destroy that location by driving on it and walking all over it?

Not sure if there are any Warcraft fans it there, but this gives me remeniscent feels about the thousand needles salt flats before it was flooded in cata

Racetrack because of the rocks that move around on ice/water creating trails. Playa is a flat desert surface, geographical term. You should definitely google this place, a discussion doesn't do it justice - some incredible photography comes out of here. But it's been vandalized recently and the surface has been marred for who knows how long.

Oh hahahahah

Agreed, it's a poorly edited photo and also not even the core of the Milky Way. If you're planning a trip like this, you should plan it so you're there when the core is above the horizon.

Oh I agree, but this is taking it too far. But I suppose different strokes for different folks, right?

I was there last week and there were some tire marks near the Grand Stand :/

I really think we need a no-photoshop rule here in /sub/earthporn because it’s not really earth or photography any more; it’s digital art.

The pioneers used to ride these babies for miles!

no because then you'd see he literally dragged a brighten brush across the sky diagonally lol

I'm not even a photographer necessarily, but the editing was what I noticed first and was somewhat off-putting

He said he used a nikon 16-35mm f/4. You can reasonably deduce that f/4 is the largest aperture available on that lens, even at 16mm.

Doesn't look natural at all

Nearly everything that I see from this sub looks over-saturated and unnatural. I don't understand why people like that, it doesn't look real to me. I guess it makes sense though for a sub called EarthPorn, when you consider what you see in regular people vs. what you see in porn

Most reddit comment threads.

they're minerals marie

He was there in 2015 and the vandal report is from 2016

Not in Jersey or a few other states. Jersey just raised their tobacco age from 19 to 21 and there are others that are at least 19. Episode is almost as old as me tho, got it beat by a little over a year

I understand your anger, but there are better ways to fight for nature conservation than wishing death on people.

Good Bot

Knowing nothing about the area, why is it called "racetrack" if you're not supposed to drive on it, and wtf is a "playa" other than a slang version of "player"?

(Yes I know I could just Google it but I like discussion.)

It’s cosmetic, but it kinda sucks to mess with a rock’s footprints, cause you know... rock.

Walking on it is fine most of the time, but when it rains, walking on it will leave footprints embedded in the ground that will last until the next time it rains (this is a desert so that would be a long time).

Driving on it at all will leave massive tire tracks that also will last until the next time it rains.

I was there last week and there were tire tracks, footprints, and even a part with someone’s name carved into the ground.

Fortunately, the racetrack is pretty big, and there is plenty of undamaged racetrack to go look at.

I too have seen the episode

I have zero problems with people editing landscape images. But you'd expect some what of a realism being kept in the final edit. When the foreground is 3 stops brighter than the night sky, it's extremely unrealistic.

/u/BrentGoesOutside you're a shitter man. I've been to San Pedro de Atacama to stargaze as part of my PhD research and the sky looks nothing like this. Stop fucking up natural beauty with your bullshit kid.

I assume you're talking about skipping the wishing and grabbing a steel pipe?

If you get stuck in Death Valley, there's only one tow company that will get your car out of there: Millers Towing in Lone Pine. I wish I didn't know this from experience..

Another note about getting here:

On maps and GPS it looks like Saline Valley Rd to Lippincott Rd is a shorter route from the west and your gps might direct you here. DO NOT TAKE THIS ROAD UNLESS YOU HAVE A 4WD VEHICLE BUILT FOR OFF-ROADING WITH VERY HIGH GROUND CLEARANCE. I made this mistake and almost got stranded with a flat tire in a regular 4WD SUV. AAA WILL NOT COME TOW YOU OUT OF HERE. Learn from my mistake, don’t trust your gps. Take the longer route to the east through stovepipe to Scotty’s castle and save yourself the time and headache. There are many unmarked and unpatrolled roads out there. Be safe!
