Napoli and Genoa fanbases have a really strong friendship (in italian we have the word "gemellaggio" that in english would be "twinning" but apparently it's used only for cities, like sister cities)

This is one of the oldest italian friendship between fanbases and was born in 1982 when a 2-2 draw in San Paolo saved Genoa from relegation.

So everytime they face each other we see both fans togheter in the stadiums, like this or this

2007

In 2005 both Napoli and Genoa are in Serie C (third tier league), Napoli for bankrupt, Genoa for some illecit things, and they both got promoted to Serie B.

In the same time Calciopoli happened and Juventus got relegated to Serie B.

So Serie B 2006-07 started with Juventus, Napoli and Genoa.

The rules are that the first 2 teams got a direct promotion, the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th go to playoffs, unless there are 10+ points between 3rd place and 4th place; in that case the first 3 get direct promotion.

The table after 41 (out of 42) games was this:

Team
Pt

Juventus
85

Napoli
78

Genoa
77

Piacenza
67

And the case happened that last game was exactly Genoa-Napoli.

Basically with a Piacenza win, one between Napoli and Genoa would have made the playoffs.

And only if Piacenza couldn't win, and with a draw in Genoa-Napoli, both teams would have promoted.

Piacenza game was at home against Triestina, that needed 1 point to avoid relegation.

The game

The game started and first half was a real game.

30' minute, stadium got sad, Piacenza scored, and at that moment Genoa had to make the playoffs

The game bacame serious.

Napoli hit the post with Sosa and then Genoa hit the post too. Both teams tried to score and had plenty chances. Highlights

But then when nobody expected it, 65' minute, the stadium exploded, Triestina scored and Piacenza was now only drawing. With 2 draws both teams are in Serie A.

Genoa-Napoli became a less serious game with everyone's ears on Piacenza-Triestina, even tho lot of times remaining

So we got to 90' in Genoa-Napoli, ref gave 6 minutes of extra time.

After 3 minutes, Piacenza-Triestina ended with the final result of 1-1.

Things began to be pretty crazy.(1:23)

Fans of both teams invaded the pitch and players started to celebrate. TV journalists were on the pitch too, and both coaches were interviewed. "It's not ended, it's not ended"(2:07)

Many players gave their shirts and pants to fans.

But the game was not ended yet. Referee said they still needed to play the remaining 3 minutes. So with help of the police, fans got out of the pitch.

Masiello was basically naked (3:33).

Meanwhile Genoa staff tried to break down the door of locker room to retrieve some other shirts. (4:39)

Players wore shirts on reverse, and others without pants. (5:33)

So they played just 1 minute passing the ball, and then the game ended with a second invasion of the fans.

Now everyone could celebrate.

Sosa with no pants, and with Maradona shirt, on the gate with fans

Cannavaro realinzing what's happening

Cannavaro still crying

A donkey (club's symbol) celebrating with Arya Stark in Piazza del Plebiscito

PS:

I am a Napoli fan (sadly not born yet during Maradona) and this is still my favorite memory about my club. Such an happy day it was.

PPS:

We can find HD videos of people landing on the moon 50 years ago, and i couldn't find any footage, pics or video with more than just 3 pixels in 2007. What the hell.

Anyway full game

PPPS:

Damn Juve was there too. We can't make a year in second division that we find her there too.

That random 'Juve 🖕 merda' scarf.

Genoa 💙

Genoa tried their hardest on the final matchday last season to defeat Roma to help Napoli finish in 2nd place. Alas, despite holding them 2-2 with just a few mins remaining, Perotti scored for Roma, sending them to second and direct Champions League qualification.

So that's why they were so stubborn about that game!

Napoli relegated Milan instead of Genoa one year. I think that’s the unofficial start of it.

At first I was like wow this is a nice picture, its so friendly I'm surprised there are no............then i noticed the scarf and I started laughing my ass off.

I had no idea about this. Amazing post.

It's at the beginning of the post. A draw between Napoli and Genoa in 1982 saved the latter from relegation. Add to this possible common enemies etc. Gemellaggi are born out of the most random reasons, I think another famous one is between Marseille and Sampdoria.

Why do you guys like each other so much? I absolutely detest every other Turkish team.

another famous one is between Marseille and Sampdoria

yes, that's why another rivalry we have is with Marseille.

I remember the group of death of some year ago with Napoli, Arsenal, Dortmund and Marseille.

There were fights between the fans.

At least we have a small friendship with Borussia Dormund fans

Oooooooooooooooo football friends!

Reminds me of us and Torino. Wholesome stuff

Likewise. Consider myself a knowledged football fan and this is just a brilliant write-up I would otherwise never know about. Probably the best part of this community is the diversity, allowing for so much knowledge-share between various fanbases. Not only is this one of the best posts I’ve ever read, I hope it motivates others to post and pass along this kind of information. Bravo, /u/AreKing!

Also one of the finest cities in Italy.

ahah, let's say there are different points of view

i tought it was a nice picture, then it was just perfect <3

I had a season ticket (just 190€!) for that Serie B camapaign and it was awesome throughout for us fans. Juve were obviously winning often and scoring lots of goals which made for very entertaining matches and a morale boost for everyone after the Calciopoli thing. The club also organised secondary events to keep the spirits up, such as a reunion of past legends on the pitch on matchday and special celebrations for Del Piero becoming all-time leading goalscorer.

On top of that, Juve were certainly a cut above everyone else but the rest of the league was very competitive and coming up with Napoli and Genoa tells it all. It was one of the best seasons to be a fan, Serie B felt more like "sport" and less like business.

you know what? right now as a Napoli fan i'm watching the best football our club has ever played. We are fighting for the title, and we are playing CL football.

But i still remember those years as something special.

Not that i would come back to that, but it just felt special, and more passionate

Our first year in Serie A too. Every game was magic. Great passion and atmosphere.

I think only winning this damn scudetto would overcome those years in my best memories.

So the best may win this year. Cheers

Torino and Benfica too after the tragedy of 1949. My granpa was a hardcore Benfica fan and every May 4th he and his friends would drink a bottle in honor of the players and the team.

it's said in the post. They avoided relegation in Naples and so a friendship started

Then after getting promoted and celebrate togheter how could you not be happy with them?

Anyway it helps that Napoli and Genoa basically never fought for the same main goal.

Genoa was the biggest team when Napoli didn't exist yet

During Maradona era, Genoa was in serie B.

Then when Genoa finally got strong again with Milito fighting for CL, Napoli was middle table.

And now, Genoa is struggling again.

Between top teams it's difficult to have friendship.

And Napoli probably has the most rivalries in all the serie A.

Juve, Milan, Inter, Roma, Lazio, Torino, Fiorentina, Sampdoria, Cagliari, Atalanta, Verona are the strongest rivalries

Yep, in contrast to Venice, it remained what it always was and what Fabrizio de André sung about - a beautiful and lively port city with all shades of life. Probably my favourite city in Italy and I have seen quite a few

There´s a three way friendship between Juve, ADO and Legia Warsaw hooligans (somehow extended to Swansea and Club Brugge IIRC). The reason is probably being racist and breaking shit up.

This comment will do a better job than me

This is a Serie B thread mate

The second picture.

About halfway to the top left from the centre.

That's awesome that the players are in on the friendship too

I love this so much. Lol at the Genoa players putting their shirts on inside out at the end

At least we have a small friendship with Borussia Dormund fans

Share a common bond of being hipster clubs.

Arya Stark and the donkey lol

That's wholesome!

Plus the focaccia there is the best in the world

Great post OP. This sub needs more posts like these instead of player/coach quotes with clickbait titles.

Because of Joe Hart ofcourse

Why are you friends with Torino?

Forza Napoli FFS!

This is great, love me some Serie A

Great post.

As a Triestina and Juventus fan, that was probably the only time I had a reason to celebrate for both my teams at the same time! I remember feeling a bit sad for Piacenza as we spoiled their dream, but god did it feel good when captain Allegretti equalized. Here's to hoping Triestina will one day be again in the same league as Napoli and Genoa... Serie B works for me too ;)
