Little tip for W&C that a lot of people don't seem to know: there's a chest that almost always has a bomb in the shack in the field to the right at the beginning. There's also a guaranteed (probably?) two heals nearby on the road.

Heals are not guaranteed, but really high chance. Have gotten pots/bombs from there before. Anyways really good tip.

I actually wouldn't rank W&C towards the easy side of cata contracts because it's a non-linear map. It is a simple map, but non-true-solo-wizards will drop like flies if people peel off to head for sacks/heals/revives/ogre battles in an uncoordinated fashion.
Essentially, there's one way to play HoM, with minor differences in choice of routes. There are dozens of ways to complete the objectives on W&C. Without a plan and some discipline W&C can be a meat grinder!
My preference is to split 2x2 (one pair to the uphill side/field shack, one pair to the house) for loot, and especially a strength potion for ogre deletion. Regroup to take the first horde and then proceed from there. Here's a sample strat for the sacks:
Again, the specific strategy doesn't matter nearly as much as getting everyone to pull together.

I agree. As a newer player I always find W&C to be a struggle unless someone is basically soloing it since I mostly just PUG it up. I also find it a lot easier to get backstabbed than other maps since the rat approach patterns are unique compared to say HoM where things come in a line from somewhere.

Yep. Go right from the start instead of towards the building and there's usually 2 heals in the boxes in front of you. Keep going straight forward and jump the fence to find the shack with the chest in it with the chance of another heal and or bombs and potions:)
