Percentage of persons aged 20-24 neither in employment nor in education or training, 2016
I've redone it better.

Selling used cars from Germany is a job, ok?

Stolen cars are usually used.

why only 12% and 20%? Pretty useless map

Used stolen

Ftfy

Not to derail this topic, but getting these young people into the job market or some sort of training needs to be a priority. We are spending tens of billions of Euro's per year to deal with the collective fallout of the 2015-now migration, while we have millions of young people left behind. The longer they stay out of the labour market, the harder it will be to get them into productive work. This is a dangerous trend.

That really is better

Slovenia central confirmed

Indeed that was one of my first questions. Having such a chart just screams for agenda pushing (if it wasn't an eurostat source), only 3 colours, strange percentages (12% for first colour, 8% for second and 80% above )

Looking at the original data ( link below the graphic on http://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/products-eurostat-news/-/EDN-20170811-1) you see that the values actually range from 5,4% all the way to 34,7%.

Which means that the first color has a range of ~7%, the second 8% and the last of ~15%.

Edit: Now i think about it again, with ranges of 5-15%,15-25% and 25-35% or maybe even with 5% ranges and 6 colours, the graphic would show way better where things are the worst. As 29,1% in Italy is way worse than 21,2% in Spain (not good though)

Fuck...

I feel like Australia should fall into the central and eastern European Eurovision block when I read comments like this.

Every single country in the EU has a massive unfulfilled need of technicians and engineers right now, especially in Eastern Europe (since anyone halfway capable can consider going West).

Every single country in Eastern Europe has some unused agricultural lands left over from when communist-imposed serfdom was abolished (though that'll employ a tiny ammount of people compared to the total population)

Some countries also have trouble filling up their army (this is a tiny number compared to the total population).

Damn Italy, whaddup!? Over 30%? Are these numbers real?

Oh yeah, guess who's no longer Eastern Europe.

The 40th Parallel North is now hearby known as the NEET Line.

Good thing we're not busy importing millions of additional unemployable people.

You never were!

God bless them. They are the backbone of 4chan.

is hard times in mediterranean :(

But how will you motivate young people to move to eastern Europe to toil the soil (which may not bring good results, definitely not immediate ones) or go into engineering, if as you yourself said western Europe pays more?

Awww, thank you Senpai ☺️😊❤️

But where will you put them?

Unfortunately they are! I guess those are the people who still are economically funded by their parents (which are the main reason for this failure, in my opinion) and who never grew up (or didn't want to) enough to study or find a real job and possibly get out of home...

That is quite a dilemma, isn't it? There are a few things we could do to start:

Encourage migration to wealthier EU nations with low unemployment. (From Southern European nations with high unemployment. This is not to be confused with external migration into the EU.)

Give grants to companies offering apprenticeships to people struggling to find employment. This is common in North America.

Give low interest loans/grants for establishing agricultural businesses. This would help with the depopulation of the European countryside. As well, loans could be provided for small-scale entrepreneurship in the cities and towns, in the hopes that this would create jobs or at least relieve some pressure on the labour market.

I'm sure there are more options, but we should start prioritizing internal EU workers before we rush to bring in an external labour force.

I first heard about Bitcoins when they were $12 and thought about buying maybe a 100 just for whatever, but that was a shower-thought and I forgot about it immediately afterwards.

To think that they went to over $1000, jeesh. That shower-thought could have paid for my university tuition.

Ha! In your face Spain!

And crypto-coin mining. Actually, I've heard of friends-of-friends who got a nice stash of cash out of it (between 30,000 to 100,000 euros), but for every case like that that's tens or hundreds of other cases who are too late to the game. I guess that's how a bubble builds itself.

Hey, the problem is getting those young people some work. Many of them already are in Eastern Europe and doing nothing (Officialy. At least in Bulgaria some of those NEETs are actually fully employed in organised crime.)

So getting them employed or educated is still a win, even if they later decide to go do something else.

Also, fuck toiling the soil. We need those lands productive, and those young people feeling like they are doing something meaningful. Post 1980s agriculture or not point in doing it.

Here are all the numbers.

"practically new"

The previous owner was a old couple that was going with it to church and the shop, but the husband decided to sell it after the wife died.

shh! we've been getting the Nordic vote so far, the nordics may realise who we vite vote for, don't undermine Marie's work!

We pretty much do

Just sad. I know a couple people who work in re-integration of (long-time) unemployed and from their stories it's often incredibly difficult once people have done "nothing" for 5 or 10 years, even if they're mentally together dudes. Especially for younger people.

Even if things do improve in the south there's gonna be a shitton of people who'd need help getting back into things. Rough.

why not reupload to /sub/europe?

Spaniards call them "ninis" cuz "ni estudian, ni trabajan."

Eat that, Finland!

Someone shared the full table above, its mostly due to gender imbalance, unlike other European countries. It's 18,0% for males 20-24, and 46,4% for females 20-24.

Also notable that these percentages increase with age for females, and decrease for males (e.g. it's 11,4% for males 30-34, and 57,1% for females 30-34.)

NEETs of both genders mostly rely on their families, I imagine; there is no pressure to move out like in Western Europe; and it is considered acceptable especially for women not to work, increasingly more so as they get married / become mothers.

What is everyone doing in Macedonia?

No offense, but i think this is bs. There are surely cultural, historical and geopolitical reasons, but the whole cold/hot argument is just a simple and convenient explaination that is not true

That shitty frog ruins it

That's a pretty decent plan, I'd say. But the first point confuses me. Wouldn't it create tensions between newly arrived southerners and locals, who would also be seeking jobs?

map with up to 12% as a lowest point - seems like almost technological singularity...

It might not be what you meant to type, but it's what you should have typed.

To the top with you!

I once bought 3 BTC for around 80€. Unfortunately I had to sell it at a loss.

I bought back in last year when the were at 600€. I'm still making huge wins, but to think I could have turned 80€ into 8 000€...

They are like 3000€ atm.

It could if the migration was overwhelming or into areas with high unemployment. I'd say it would only work in places where there is a high demand for workers (sub 5% unemployment) and where the local populace is aware of the issue and doesn't feel that southerners would cause too many problems.

Edit: Perhaps the Ukrainian influx into Poland is a good example. Culturally compatible people who are filling low end jobs in a place with low unemployment. I think this is the optimal use of freedom of movement rights, or visa issuance.

Hey we're friendly as long as you respect a personal space of about 10 metres and don't talk.

In Italy, Im gonna guess more with their parents. Despite this data for example a lot of people do 'casual unofficial work', usually for a family's business, so its not as bad ad it looks (still bad obviously). This is also backed up by the low homeless rate in Italy. This is totally anecdotal though

You may think that. But labour laws are pretty flexible and regulations are business friendly in the Germanic countries. So it is rather the opposite.

We are way ahead in the Occultism department.

Currently, we can magically make unemployed, employed by just ignoring them.

It's well known that if an unemployed Portuguese doesn't report to the government that she/he isn't unemployed every 2-3 months, that just means she/he is secretly working!

Australia can get very Balkan sometimes

Why not.

You just jelly that Slovenia is now confirmed member of the Germanic tribe.

Yeah someone was really lazy it looks like.

Nah the Spanish and Italian taxpayers will pay for them!

Italy, Greece and Spain the fuck is wrong with you. And how will you fix this... so we can steal some solutions 20 years after you've fixed it.

Your relationship with Scandinavia is moving too fast, please go away.

It's purely for selfish reasons tbh, if we can be associated with the laid back surfer dude it might remove some of our current "cold, unfriendly and depressed" stigma ;)

The problem is those unfulfilled high-skill position are often paid shit. I mean, in Italy often they pay an engineer something around 1200e for the first years for 40 hours, while mcdonalds pays you around 900 for 26 hours. You see the problem here? Of course they move to other countries where the pay is decent

Apparently, designing clickbaity fake-news websites during sports events or major electoral cycles then living off ad revenue is A Thing among students/NEETs in Macedonia and to be fair it's actually kind of genius.

Although it's unfortunate that so many people were dumb enough to believe Clinton literally ran a pedophile smuggling ring out of a pizza restaurant.

And why between 20 and 24, it seems very arbitrary. For instance why not 18-25? Which would cover university time in most countries.

Nah, it's too much of a fuss. They usually buy heavily used cars like taxis, bring their registered kilometres back and then sell it as "practically new".

Not really, it's just an exaggeration of the fact that some people find it difficult to live by their own, since the salaries don't let them live in a stable situation with a house of their own, for example.

Edit: typos

We could call it "national-socialism". Rolls off the tongue.

Any nation that fails to find useful occupations to engage its young men will pay a terrible price.

STAY UNEMPLOYED MAINLANDERS

It does, and therefore very gorgeous.

That's because everyone is a "student"

Why is it so high in Turkey? What do young NEETs do in Turkey - rely on their families? Work in the black/gray economy?

You can magically change 350 000 km into 180 000 and sell it much much faster. Doesn't matter what original number was, but you have to make it under 200 000 to sell even old crappy cars.

Right behind German-Polish border, there are usually small shops advertising themselves with "Odometer Calibrating" banners. Buy old junk in Germany, pay a small price for cutting odometer number in half and sell it with solid profit in Poland.

Selling selfie sticks and laser pointers isn't a job?

Yes I agree, just getting them into the workforce is progress. No matter the job, at least it's a start.

I would disagree about not tilling the soil though. There is plenty of opportunity in creating quality domestic products such as wine, brandy, olive oil (in Croatia/Greece). This could also be used to attract tourists (winery tours/tastings for example) which would further increase incomes.

Enjoy your victory, for it will be your last.

there's a typo with 11,9, it should be 10,9, let me reupload

Just kiss Erdogan's right buttcheek, and voila, you'll be employed. Probably as a government propaganda troll, but who cares.

They should add an extra color just for Greece (45.5%).

Yes, in a world when jobs are becoming more scarce (because of how efficient we have become) we should create even stronger atmosphere of shaming those without a job. /s

Wow, that's actually a lot of people. But I don't think you can blame them much in countries like Spain, Italy, and Greece. The economies aren't great, there are more people, and the governments are busy or "busy" with other things.

Getting employed is difficult, let alone getting employment in a position with a good wage, and there's no point training or going into education given the latter, AND worsening competition, unless you were to look outside, BUT now that's brain drain for the home countries. It's just unfortunate.

Bruh it's hard to do shit here.

i know about that. i was referring to changing 800 000 to 200 000 which is faster when done forwards (odometers usually reset after 1 000 000)

Our president is shit and our government is corrupt.

Not mutually exclusive, but at least in Spain, they definitely live with their parents. Most people in the 20-30 range still hasn't left home (it's a way to save a bit before being on your own).

Same thing when they were 1€. Then I punched myself in the head when they were valued at 200€. Now they are in the thousands and I keep thinking I should have bought them when they were 200€. Now I'm just afraid the bubble is gonna burst so I put it out of my mind.

It is no different than learning any other language.

that is a barrier enough for most people. Unless you have other reasons, learning a whole language just on the chance of employment is not worth it.

Why is it always those hot counties??

Except that Tsipras' Syriza party in Greece is far left, and Italy is run by an independent, who was formerly of centre-left democratic party.

Meanwhile the UK has had conservatives in power since 2010, and in Germany Merkel leads the "liberal Conservative" Christian democratic union.

So basically everything you said is totally wrong.

Most likely they are not involved in crime because that's what they like doing, but because they don't have any other option.

Do these people live on unemployment pay or with their parents? Is there data?

It should be noted that in the mediterranean cultures it's wayy more common to pay people under the table, especially for that age group.

I've heard several stories from Spanish and Turkish friends about how it's normal to collect unemployment benefits while you work for a bar or convenience store, then they will "employ" you again for just long enough for you to meet the requirements for more benefits.

I'm pretty sure this map overlaps perfectly with one showing young people's faith in their government.

They typical dilema:

You are too young and without experience, so we won't hire you.

You are too old and you cost too much, so we won't hire you.

So what should we do in this current type of society where the young and the old can't find jobs?

Not full blown communism, just a bit socialist with a nation-centric twist!

Basically most the guys who hated studying and left school in order to work are now unemployed due to the crisis. Many young people went back to study some vocational training, but there's always a fraction of them who will never step in a classroom of any kind.

We can only pray to the Macroeconomy Gods and wait...
