Obama's actual portrait

Now this is a promising meme format

That makes OP a lying son of a bitch.

Actual portrait for the curious

Obama portraitor meme

Yeah fuck that gu...wait

Ah yes this is how memes should be unveiled from now on

Don't worry, he's just an unknown human.

Pence was not amused.

He got his portrait done by Titus from the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt 😋

/sub/totallynotop

They personally picked the artists but the reveal was a surprise.

He is stuck here with us.

Pence backs out of frame to go hide his erection.

So serious question, did the Obama’s see those portraits before the unveiling?

I could be mistaken but I think this is his portrait for the Smithsonian museum, not his official WH portrait.

This new meme format is a burning red hot buy

I can't help but think he looks like his inner monologue is something like "Oh okay, here we goooo...oh. Hm. Yeah that is a little weird. Smile though. Beee polite. Like when grandma knitted you that sweater Keep smiling."

He went straight to conversion therapy.

I honestly think that's pretty ugly looking. Are any other portraits like that? With a weird background like that?

Funny enough the actual portrait looks like something Titus would paint.

This sounds like a NSFW sub, actually, if it features girls.

Here's

According to the googling I just did, this is his official portrait unveiled just yesterday, commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery.

Each flower is from a prominent place from his history, Kenya, Hawaii, and Chicago.

Scrolling down that page, I was thinking JFK's was gonna be most unusual, then when I got to Clinton I actually gave an audible "What the fuck"

here you go then

there was none. he knew kehinde wiley when he chose him to do the painting. this is kehinde's style. obama made an intentionally bold choice.

"African blue lilies represent Kenya, his father’s birthplace; jasmine stands for Hawaii, where Mr. Obama himself was born; chrysanthemums, the official flower of Chicago, reference the city where his political career began, and where he met his wife."

Happy cake day

Clinton’s was painted by artist Chuck Close, who has a condition known as “face blindness,” which makes it difficult for him to recognize the human face. However, he is known for his portraits, which are painted from photographs square-by-square (rather than as a whole face). It’s an unusual style, but unique to Close and well-renowned. If anyone was wondering!

This is his portrait for the national portrait gallery, which is a smithsonian museum.

Visiting the smithsonian is an unrivaled experience. The museums are free, and each is worth every minute you can give.

Later: Ok, lets see Michelles...oh god don't laugh, just keep cool, maybe there is an inspiring story about how she broke both of her arms but her mentally disabled gradeschooler stepped in to do the painting.

I like obama but I hate his portrait. A field of flowers? Why?

IDK I think it looks pretty fuckin dope. Throw a "Parental advisory" label on that and you got the hottest new soundcloud artist

I was about to say the same thing.

I first read it as "totally no top" and thought it meant bottoms pretending to be tops.

I believe Wikipedia specifically mentions it is not commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery, but it is his presidential portrait.

Edit: My bad, it's just not public domain. I had assumed a "national" something society was federally funded. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portraits_of_Presidents_of_the_United_States

I have invested.

I mean, Obama picked the artist, and knew it would be in this style.

It won't be in the white house. This is for the Smithsonian's national portrait gallery. They purposefully commissioned the artist because this was his art style. The white house portrait is an entirely separate thing.

What does N*SYNC have to do with this?

Real version

Best short it in 3 days, when /sub/dankmemes gets a hold of it.

This isn't the WH portrait like people are thinking. Here's Obama's portraits.

It's part of that particular artist's distinct style. He apparently paints a lot of prominent black men and women in front of busy, floral backgrounds

Official Smithsonian portrait, not official White House portrait.

Big difference, and the media has done a shit job conveying that.

She specifically chose the artist because she likes her style and how she uses more grayscale to showcase African Americans. You look like you are expecting realism when Michelle chose it for different reasons.

So while I'm suuuuure you could have done better, she still wouldn't select you because it's now what she wanted. But I don't think I need to explain to a professional artist who has made thousands of dollars what subjectivity is.

word for word

you know OP, I too saw Jimmy Kimmel. Unlike you, I didn't think to take his show's jokes, and post them on Reddit

edit: formatting

Honestly, if this was the real one, I wouldn't be mad.

I can't be the only one who thinks the actual portrait is good and enjoyable.

Thank you

Manspreading son of a bitch

What a travesty! This internet nobody stole a millionaire’s joke that he likely didn’t write himself! Fuck this horse shit!

All what you said is true, but the portrait looks nothing like her.

I really like her's - the dress is amazing and I love the contrast and how bold it is

love this artist. i saw the LL Cool J portrait in the national gallery a couple of years ago.. it's absolutely massive, and probably the coolest portrait in the whole gallery.

Hey, wait a second....

Oh shit! It’s the fuzz!

It's like they made a wax sculpture, melted it a bit, then drew that.

Edit: Link for the lazy

First line of the exhibit page on NPG’s website says it was their commission.

It looks like one of those deep dream simulator pictures.

Nah. You know how pacemakers work, zapping the heart when it starts fucking around? He has something like that, but for the gay.

i like dubya's. it's very him.

I feel let down tbh

Yeah, these people are never going to get it. In 50 years, this portrait will likely be viewed as revolutionary. But contemporaneously, people will always recoil at someone so aggressively breaking the norm.

Amazing

e Pinot Noir gu

I was just thinking that's thy!

Oh sh*t. Thank you! I guess some Reddit B-Day Miller Lites are in order! ;)

he paints a lot of "everyday" people too, that's one of the hallmarks of his work. elevating black people by painting them as royalty, with opulent backgrounds and commanding poses.

It's a Chuck Close, he got his master's from Yale. He paints photo realistic portraits even though he is paralyzed from the neck down, not to mention he has prosopagnosia. A lot of his work before his stroke is more "realistic" a shame most on this thread just pass off his work as "oh man that guy probably did a lot of acid"

Idk I think it looks pretty cool and unique.

Why did you start at the "e" and end at the "u?"

It actually looks a lot better there than in the header on the other page linked above. Not bad, just a different style.

I like some of Amy Sherald's other work, and I appreciate this portrait on an aesthetic level, but I really don't think it looks much at all like Michelle Obama. As a piece of art, I think it's successful. As a portrait? Ehh, not so much. Just my opinion, of course.

Alternate version

It’s reddit. If it’s not photorealistic, then it must be crap. The purpose of art is to reproduce reality with 100% fidelity.

How is it different than the previous portraits? Well, you see, the others were made by someone with talent.

The Michelle one wouldn't look out of place on some DeviantArt page next to some shoddy Sonic fanart.

Wish it was the Eric Andre version.

You're welcome!

It was done after he died, that's why.

In 1000 years, this portrait will be the only one left standing.

I really like JFKs, mostly because I know he had some serious health issues and was drugged a lot to keep the pain levels manageable. I kind of feel like that's how he got through the last several years of his life, like a big blur.

trump's face made me lol at the end

This is the right answer! It's on the Chicago Tribune page.

LBJ's is pretty awesome.

GWB looks like he forgot it was portrait day and was just like "hey what if I just sit on this couch over here...that cool?"

To be perfectly honest... I expected this

"Mr. Obama" sounds weird

For me is like a cheap Photoshop filter... Both of them are "trendy" in the context of a small timespan, could not age well.

Yeah, it's pretty cool. I instantly recognized the artist because of his huge portrait painting titled "St. Dionysius" that I used to see all the time at the Milwaukee Art Museum. The artist is Kehinde Wiley, by the way.

Yea I love Kehinde Wiley’s work. It’s so dense with figurative meaning, but still has so much personality. My first experience with his painting was encountering his adaptation of Napoleon leading his army across the Alps - I remember being awestruck by the massive size, then getting up really close and seeing the tiny details in it. The red “velvet” of the framing is actually painted as well, and has 1000s of teeny little sperm swimming through it.
