If you fear the dark, wholesome teddybear's got you

As a demon, I can confirm. Teddy bears don't fuck around.

The fact that it's a little wooden sword makes it even better.

Real motherfuckers use wooden swords

Username checks out.

I want a Disney film on this, like Toy Story but more fluffy.

The greatest swordsman alive didn't have a sword?!

Was first trying to figure out whether to look at it like a manga or a comic. Didn't want to spoil it for myself.

Every time I see this drawing or anything like it. I feel the need to make everyone watch this video

Wouldn't it just be Toy Story meets Monsters Inc.?

As an independent second source, I can confirm that this username does indeed check out.

When your ready, you won't need to

I had the same problem and totally spoiled it for myself.

shhhh

Manga follows the Japanese format of going right to left in comic panels

I started writing a kid's book based on this premise a while back.

Here's my favourite:

When the night goes dark, and all little boys and girls go to sleep, there are many, many creatures that awake. Some are good, some are bad, and the world around the sleeping child, is where they do battle.

It is on the window sill, by the lamp shade, and on the bedhead that they fight, brave hearts against cool shadows, as our defenders watch over our children, against the shadows that come with the night.

On this night, the defender is Sally McBear, and she was not the normal teddy bear, she was a little different to most. She didn't carry a sword, or a bow, and she didn't quietly leap about the furniture, flipping this way and that - she wasn't flexible enough to do that.

She was a soft and cuddly teddy bear, extremely soft and fluffy, white fur and red paws, with a wide-brimmed hate with a pink ribbon stitched onto her head, and she was sitting quietly on the window sill, smiling a deep smile, and watching as the shadow struggled to slip through the gap on the window sill.

She stood hesitantly, and smiled sweetly, making the shadow cringe and move back slowly, but she shook her head, and pushed the window open, and flung a paw inwards dramatically, "Please have a seat."

The Shadow stared at her, expecting a trap, or at least a fight.

She walked backwards and laid out a piece of cloth on the hardwood table, and laid out a tiny china set. She waved at the mat as she bustled around preparing the tea.

The shadow swarmed and roiled, racing from the window ledge, and paused fearfully in a ball at the edge. It watched in terror, expecting a fight, as she carefully boiled the leaves in the pot, focusing her glare on it. It watched her as she poured a mug and sniffed deeply.

"Glorious. Gyokura, a sweet green tea." She smiled sweetly and sipped it, and looked down her fluffy snout at the quivering shadow, "Care for some tea?"

The shadow reared up, trying to plumb the depths of her mind for her greatest terror, and it paused and collapsed into a shape resembling a chocolate pudding - it was sulking. It hadn't found a single fear.

She smiled and sipped her tea.

The shadow scrunched itself up into the shape of a a bowl of icecream, pouting.

She rolled her eyes and raised an empty china cup, "Care to join me?"

The shadow tried to cross it's arms, but forgetting that it didn't have any, it ended up as a mangled chocolate pretzel.

She covered her mouth with one paw, stifling a giggle.

The shadow growled angrily, and she glared, "I'd rather we kept this civil."

The shadow paused, puzzled, and reformed as a mirror of her, frowning. "I... I..."

She grinned, "You'll get there. Keep trying."

The shadow winced, "I bring... Night... Nightmare. You... You... Fight me."

She shrugged, "I've never been one for violence. Much prefer talking. It's easier."

It stared at her, uncomprehending.

She laughed girlily, "Why must you bring nightmares? Why must I fight? I prefer tea."

The shadow fled - other houses were less confusing.

And with a bad ass teddy bear that fights demons while looking completely zen and stoic.

Well that's the best thing I've ever seen.

Everyone falls the first time

The first thing I thought of when I saw this post. I love that pic, it was my wallpaper for a long time.

That drawing was optioned by Hollywood, with The Rock to produce and possibly star.

http://www.slashfilm.com/dwayne-johnson-to-star-in-teddy-bear-based-on-deviantart-drawing/

Haven't heard anything about it lately though, and I don't find it on IMDB. Maybe it's been abandoned.

Meryn Fookin Trant

I'm gonna say this is an idea that more than one person could have.

Looks like a concept for an indie game.

I'd be down for that, just as long as the main characters aren't in those two movies I'd love this one.

Nice

That was way better than I expected it to be.

Independent succend source, can cumfirm that this username does indeed check out.

The first sword of Bravos does not run!

Cmon they're based on something Teddy Roosevelt did. TR is what everything evil fears.

Well the greatest swordsman alive only ever lost one fight and that was to a farm hand. And then again as Matrim Cauthon beat galad using nothing other than a short club

This would make for a great toy story spin off

You think that's air you're breathing right now? Hm.

Too old

To anyone wondering if this is hyperbole, it is not.

Literally the best thing I've ever seen.

How do you view manga?

Am I having a stroke or is this normal for reddit?

Very creative, keep it up!

I have a print of that framed in the bedroom!

Id watch that.

That's right. Kyotōryū is the strongest style.

Aw, I actually kinda want them to have a teddy bear saying "try me bitch" so maybe not disney

I miss my bear. Had him into my late twenties but somehow lost him in the divorce (chaotic separation of our things). I'm in my early thirties now and it makes me said when I wonder where he went.

Oh gotcha

/u/waterguy12

I cannot believe you were serious.

Whoa

Very good but I would like to give some constructive criticism if I may.

I love this opening. It does a great set up and really makes a childs bedroom become a battleground where heroes defend against the forces of darkness.

On this night, the defender is Sally McBear, and she was not the normal teddy bear, she was a little different to most. She didn't carry a sword, or a bow, and she didn't quietly leap about the furniture, flipping this way and that - she wasn't flexible enough to do that.

This is how you describe a character. It does more than just tell as about Sally, it actually shows us parts of her personality before she even has a chance to do anything. It doesn't just explain to us who Sally is but introduces us to Sally how she would introduce herself. It has her demeanor right in the description.

Up to this point it's a really good build up with tension and the way it's diffused by Sally is both elegant and comedic. However I think after this is where it starts to weaken.

The shadow reared up, trying to plumb the depths of her mind for her greatest terror,

This is a good revitalization of the tension. It really shows that she's trying something different and the shadow is having none of it. However...

and it paused and collapsed into a shape resembling a chocolate pudding - it was sulking. It hadn't found a single fear.

After this the entire conflict falls apart. The thing is that I really like the parts after this but I feel like I'd like it better if you somehow kept all the tension you had built up before. Now we know this shadow is harmless to her and it's almost an entirely one sided conflict. The reason I liked Sally in this situation was that she was facing something that was supposed to be clearly a dangerous evil (albeit a weak one) and she was so calm and nonchalant. Now she's seemingly invincible in this conflict and it takes away a lot from the rest of this interaction and makes her victory a lot less satisfying for the reader.

She laughed girlily, "Why must you bring nightmares? Why must I fight? I prefer tea."

Be careful with your adverbs. "She laughed girlily" is an awkward way to convey that.

Overall I think it was very well done. I wouldn't ask you to change it in spite of it's flaws. I hope showing where this scene was strong and where it was weak will improve your writing but in general it's good to leave something with flaws and only change minor presentation and not change the essence of what you wrote.

Reddit here, I can confirm I will stroke you...normally.

I hope it gets made and made well.

Better illustration, by far, but totally lacking in humor.

Gorgeous sketch, not funny at all.

I guess it was a different goal.

I feel you man. When I was a little kid I had a small stuffed mouse, gray with big ears. My mother tells me it was my favorite thing since I was a toddler. I kept it through puberty and then highschool, and meant to keep it forever. Maybe pass it on to my future son or daughter, you know? It had a permanent place on my headboard (and I'm not ashamed to say it slept with me on those days when I was very, very sick).

We moved about three times in succession (recession hit hard), and my little mouse was lost.

I'm 33 now and when stuff like this reminds me I miss it all over again. My son would love it to death, I'm sure.

Edit: words.

This is one of my very favorite drawings. Does anyone know who the artist is?

A furry

So, y'know...Ted?

There was an older similar comic I saw a couple years ago and the teddy bear was standing and holding a sword while the kid slept.

What's this?

Galad and Gawyn at the same time. And Mat was just recovering from a huge hangover that was the dagger taint.

Holy shoot you just made me release I've hit a point where whenever I see a comic I read it right to left without even thinking about it unless it makes 0 sense like that.

That really was the best thing I've ever seen.
