Interviewer: "Like the old Mario games had an incredible story."
Yeah like how the princess was always in another castle. So many twists.
Yeah that guy just sounds absolutely clueless about video games.
"What games are you playing?"
"The Last Of Us. Don't know if you've heard of it."
"I just name dropped Deus Ex you twat of course I've heard of it."
When the hell does Elon Musk have time for video games, that guy works like 100 hours a week
In the biography I read on him, he grew up binging on video games like Sid Meir's Civilization. His college friends would have to drag him out of his dorm since he would play for days straight. He initially wanted to be a game designer, but decided that he wanted to do something else that would have an even greater impact for society and humanity as a whole.
Also like...Let him finish his thought.
"Playing any games?"
"Oh yeah me too! Any other games?"
"Have you tried Deus Ex?"
"I'm Elon Musk. This is Tesla. We're past that technology here now."
"... I didn't ask for this."
Loved his enthusiasm and willingness to engage about the subject after the interview was over. Seemed to indicate a genuine interest in gaming, and wouldn't surprise me if he picked up The Last of Us after this.
That interviewer however... not so good.
He tried Winston but got frustrated by how he could never manage to use the rocket boosters and land safely without fucking exploding getting shot to death.
What would be his main though?
I am guessing Metal-Buddah-with-balls.
This seems to be a problem with so many interviewers and Elon Musk - they get so caught up in the moment of interviewing him that they always cut him off. Like, let the man share his genius for goodness sake!
Did that interviewer really say the old Mario games had "an incredible story"
The gameplay on those games is why they are so loved today, there was essentially no story to them beyond; princess is kidnapped, rescue her.
maybe ill be the CEO of a few companies and change space travel forever
He's our dad
I always find it funny when people hate on Rosalina because "she has no story, she was just thrown into Galaxy then pretty much everything afterwards". She has more backstory in Super Mario Galaxy than any other Mario character over their entire histories. That game goes into her childhood, why she is where she is, her motivations, and her goals. Not once has a Mario game (besides maybe Paper Mario) done anything even close to that for Peach or Daisy. Rosalina is the most three-dimensional character in the franchise.
Do you still believe it is a one person? He's reptilian !
But for real I guess his kids play videogames(not sure how old are they) and he want to spend time with them as 'normal' father. I think very rich people also do usual human things.
Elon Musk - CEO of Space
He's got to be a Torb main. Just building shit and trying to save the world with electricity shields
As someone who uses a bow and wears tradtional nipples Japanese clothing in the future where everyone else uses guns or fancy rocket hammers, I concur.
I think very rich people also do usual human things.
The uncertainty of this statement is really funny to me.
That's Sam Altman, the president of Y Combinator and a board member of OpenAI (an initiative that Elon is also a part of).
He's not nervous --- he is one of the most influential people in SV. Elon is definitely a big deal but sama is on his level (if less well known publicly).
Ahaha jokes on you. I have achieved nothing in my life.
game designers can be impacting too!!!
THEY CAN DAMMIT DON'T HURT ME LIKE THIS
He goes into detail about this in his book. Really recommend it. But also, it seems silly to impose your schedule / problems to Musk. Your daily chores and problems aren't his - he doesn't have to cook, go grocery shopping or dry clean guys clothes. You can make lots of time to do things when you have so much leverage (money, thus people, therefore time)
"As games have become more like the replacement for the NFL I think the story telling just gets generally neglected"
Wut. We've had more hollywood blockbuster "cinematic" wannabe games in modern times than we've ever had. It's why when a AAA game comes out with much more focus on gameplay than being focused on story almost like a video game version of an "Oscar bait" biopic, it gets praised for doing something different (DOOM 2016, Soulsborne etc).
Looking at other cars being sold: You lack imagination.
but... Tesla cannons!
I mean... the obvious choice is to play a Gorilla scientist with a Tesla canon...
Yeah if I didn't know that was Elon Musk by his voice or because of video, I would have just assumed it was two guys geeking out about games. "Have you tried Deus Ex? The Last of Us? Is that good? You like that? Yeah see the original Deus Ex had great storytelling."
That interviewer seems to not know a lot about video games.
because reddit consits mainly of white middle-class young adults, who dream big, achieve a bit and play video games.
My guess he's a Symmetra main right now.
Guy was pretty nervous and young.
Looks like standard 'I'm keeping up!' banter.
And that is a great story.
You know the hero, the villain, the goal. None of these silly twists where the villain becomes a hero or the love interest betrays the hero.
Just a straight shooting story that stands the test of time. /s
Let me explain where I believe the Mario comment came from.
You're interviewing Musk and you decide to the thrown in the obscure "relatable" question about a video game. He's a nerd, let's ask him about games.
(Yeah, we all play overwatch) "Yeah I play over watch"
(oh another blizzard game... He's just talking about popular games... Oh shit. This is turning into more of a discussion. Wait he knows more about games than I though...on no, he's talking to the crew, I've lost control of the interview... SAY SOMETHING YOU IDIOT! GET HIM TO TALK YO YOU AGAIN... SAY SOMETHINGGGGGGG. OH YES! STORIES! Ummm... Old game with a story. Think. Think... something popular!)
"The old Mario games had an incredible story!"
Also, there's a thing of how CEO's humblebrag about how they have zero time for anything personal. Those who actually take some time off for their own sanity don't often advertise that fact.
👅💦👅 Daddy 👅💦👅
To be fair, I would pee my pants and freeze up if Elon Musk started talking to me about anything.
I mean I get it, but he was reallllll bad. "Mario games had great stories" lol. I could be shitting myself scared and I still wouldn't say something dumb like that.
Keep at Genji. Just start small with delivering that payload first!
I didn't see the whole interview but it seemed like a pretty awkward interaction. Elon is the one trying to start a more in-depth dialogue and the interviewer is just sitting awkwardly.
"I'm looking for a new game; any recommendations?"
"I play that already"
Sake sake sake
He's Sam Altman - president of Y-Combinator and mega-investor. It's part of his personality. He's always in a hurry.
Don't give any ideas, his arrows are already the size of a log
Why is Elon Musk everywhere on reddit
This guy is actually a real gamer, he is not bring cliche eske games like the interviewer does he actually brings the original DeusEx.
This guys is real life Bob Page ;D
Patch notes:Winston's Tesla cannon is now a Tesla Automobile Cannon. Primary fire is rapid-fire Model S's. Alt-fire is slow, high-damage Model X's.
Just me and my 💕Musky💕, hanging out I got pretty aware of older vehicles 🚗 so I started to pout 😞 He asked if I was down ⬇for something fancies 😍 🚗 and I asked what and he said he'd give me his ⚡teslies!⚡ Yeah! Guy seemed like he was in a rush to get out of there
Then again, you don't interview people for a living.
Have you considered putting a rocket on your bow?
elon musk maining widow would further cement his secret villain persona
Hey, maybe he meant Paper Mario and Super Mario RPG for the SNES? Those were surprisingly well written.
He just gets cooler and cooler
Yup! One of the reasons Galaxy 1 is my favourite Mario game.
Yeah what the hell. You get the opportunity to let Musk talk about his favorite game, I assume it's his favorite since it's the first one he mentioned, and then the interviewer is so eager to be like "Me too! Me too!" that he completely interrupts what Musk was about to say.
An interviewer should always let his or her interviewee finish speaking. There might be very good stories in there. And you can always cut out the unimportant parts later.
You joke, but THE PRINCESS IS IN ANOTHER CASTLE was the most riveting video game story of my time. Damn kids.
They bring joy and entertainment to millions of people
When I'm feeling down, I know I can sit down and load up my old copy of Age of empires, Kotor, immerse myself in the beautiful world of the Witcher 3 and forget about my shitty day of school or work. I get major anxiety thinking about the world having an existential crisis on how just little I am in the grand scheme of things. It doesn't matter if that girl you've liked for months is still with that dude that you always see at the bars hitting on other girls. You are just here to reproduce and continue your family name in this toxic world thats slowly dieing from all the corruption that inhabits it. You forget about all of that until your power goes out and that girl finds you jacking off in the parking lot.
I loved when Musk was like "hang on a minute, you started talking about something I love you can't just leave!"
In fairness, Hanzo has scatter arrow which is either super sci-fi in how it works or is a boon from the Dreadlord Cthulhu given how it defies all logic.
Simple non-Euclidean Geometry
There's a lot of games that superficially try to sell themselves on their story, but don't really have anything to say (assassin's creed and the rest of ubi's games come to mind) but there are very few that do it well. Most of the time it's a checkbox on a focus tested design doc not created by passionate writers.
What do you mean secret? He has the name and life of a Bond Villain
That, or we're living in the Cars universe.
The interviewer was about to seal the deal at second 25. Luckily for us, Elon became the interviewer and saved the day. Jack of all trades, master of all.
Revised patch notes:We felt that the ability to fire literal fucking cars was a bit too much, so Winston's Tesla Cannon now fires Nikola Tesla himself. Yeah, just, fuckin... clones of Nikola Tesla.
I read his non-auto biography; he lives an insane lifestyle and is an absolute work-a-holic. His first marriage ended, and he got married a second time, then remarried the second wife, then started divorce proceedings again, then cancelled them, and is now getting divorced again. He has been known to temporarily fire people saying he could do their job as well as his own, and if his prediction is true then they are permanently fired.
My very first thought on seeing this video was how the fuck he has time for video games.
I don't know which is which. I'm about to watch the video and see if I can find out
Oh, obviously the one in the Tesla jacket. I feel dumb now
I think he was being sarcastic
Just to confirm your assumption, yes, rich people care about their kids the same way most parents do.
I work for an IT company and we once had a request from a CEO to install Steam on his laptop so he could download and play games with his son.
That is Sam Altman, the president of Y Combinator, a startup incubator where Reddit came from. He's not as famous as Elon Musk, but he definitely doesn't interview people for a living.
You find the time if you love it
Generally, big business people like Musk have nearly every moment of every day planned out. That's not just discipline, but hired help with all the scheduling. If you've got your life that organized, and you love doing something, you're going to have time scheduled for gaming and it's going to get done. A close friend of mine is the CEO of a nationwide business and he beat FFXV before I did! A few days after I checked and saw he had gotten all the trophies in the game as well. He's always asking me for recommendations because he doesn't have time to play every game that comes along. Watching Musk confirm that The Last of Us was good amongst his staff with that excited look on his face was a familiar sight. You could tell that he was really passionate about games and couldn't wait to try another good one.
Do you feel okay about your life choices and where you're at after posting that?
Maybe he was referring to Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxys, or the other Gamecube and Wii Mario games. All had awesome stories. "Old Mario" doesn't mean just the Super Mario Bros. on Gameboy & NES.
edit: added NES to make /u/StatikDynamik feel young again
I disagree - I remember the scope of things like the Final Fantasy games, Baldur's Gate and the Warcraft games and the story telling in those games was superb. Few games nowadays have the same level of depth. The Witcher 3 is one of the few games in my recent memory that really felt like it had a similar scope.
Not even a little bit.
My mind kept telling me no.
But my heart... My heart was telling me yes.
and did. whoa
Wouldn't a non-autobiography just be a biography?
Galaxy 1 and 2 are both unbelievably choice. Tragic how many people missed out on those two glorious masterpieces. Those games saved 2007 and 2010 for me. I am almost exclusively a PC gamer and I'd seriously consider a Wii and Galaxy 1/2 for my desert island setup. They are the sublime Fantasia of 3D platforming.
Then wtf is he talking about "the old mario games had incredible story"? Sounds like he's straight up talking out of his ass.
Edit: Video cut off before realizing the interviewer was making a joke.
How come no one remembers when Mario went missing and his lil bro had to step up to the game and become the hero we didn't need, but deserved. Talk about a modern day epic
"Old Mario" doesn't mean just the Super Mario Bros. on Gameboy.
After the rest of your comment, I was anticipating NES and got Gameboy instead and now I feel even older than I should.
You forget about all of that until your power goes out and that girl finds you jacking off in the parking lot.
you know this was incredibly touching... and then...
Probably Dva, he likes mechs
I was impressed, mentioning not one, but 3 deus ex games shows a hardcore gamer. I feel like musk immediately gauged the interviewer's 'gamer level', when he brought up hearthstone, and the guy was like "I'll have to try that".
I took that to be a joke. I mean ha ha funny.
tbh he is trying to live those games not play them
Man though, think of the gaming industry of he did devote himself to that instead.
We might have another studio like CDProjektRED or oldschool-CCP. Or neural-link VR.
Instead we have electric cars that nobody uses because VR is only just now moderately good enough to start REALLY being a replacement for a social life.
The interviewer is a super rich and very well known investor. I doubt he's throwing in video game references to look cool and win Elon's approval.
The real reason he's working on improving AI is to have a better aimbot to sell to the Koreans.
why do you think he plays overwatch. he could get in a game or two in 20 minutes
Oh man, they're both INTJ as fuuuuck. Now that I think about Symmetra and Vishkar seem to reflect Musk and his endeavors to build a better future.
Okay - you do know that was a joke.
No one says, let's get engrossed In the story of MARIO
Well then it was touching
Because he's basically the embodiment of what reddit wants the world to look like. Space exploration, electric cars, renewable energy, and endless scientific endeavor.
Conversely, I now love Musk even more. He's got good taste in games.
I think you just tried explaining fame.
He doesn't use arrows, he uses telephone poles that are no longer needed in the future.
Witcher 3 is the only game that pushes so much story in their sidequest and thats a main thing why people love them so much
Cool airport. I don't get it, though. What's the video got to do with Musk?
Hahahah, jokes on you, im not young.
