4.7 @ near Berkeley, downgraded to 4.5... And down to 4.4

What to do in an Earthquake?

If you're indoors, stay there. Get under -- and hold onto --a desk or table, or stand against an interior wall. Stay clear of exterior walls, glass, heavy furniture, fireplaces and appliances. The kitchen is a particularly dangerous spot. If you’re in an office building, stay away from windows and outside walls and do not use the elevator.

If you're outside, get into the open. Stay clear of buildings, power lines or anything else that could fall on you.

Oh no, the cake didn't make it. It's in my stomach now

My fatass was getting cake and I just stood still with cake in my hand while I waited it out

I mother fucking ass dove under my desk I thought this was gonna be the big one

I'm glad the cake is ok.

RIP cake. First confirmed victim of Earthquakes in 2018.

I make ceramics for a living I thought I was done for

FIRST EARTHQUAKE JESUS LORD

Edit: from Georgia. Live on a third floor. I am now drinking a beer.

Edit 2: ok I am going to bed. Goodnight!

I thought it was my fatass dog at first.

Or maybe think about the market opportunity when everyone will need new ceramics.

Woke me up enough to get out of bed and look for an earthquake post here.

Yep, woke up about 15 seconds before it happened. Fucking spooky

The first few seconds I thought it was my upstairs neighbors fucking. Before I realized what it was I was really impressed.

Lmao. Everyone in the Bay Area is awake now

P waves woke you up! Cool!

This guy sells

I'm in hayward and I felt it.

Fuckin dog I thought you're psychic

i woke up in bed and thought "is this the one?"

then i looked up and saw the fan above my bed and was like "i am not letting a goddamn ceiling fan kill me" and got out of bed

We will rebake.

If you’re really curious, check out the Academy of Sciences Earthquake simulator in SF. They simulate the 1906 earthquake and that shit is terrifying...

3139 people browsing as of 3:01am PST, yep it woke people up all right.

I could hear earthquake for a few seconds before I felt it.

this was my cat's first earthquake and he was on the highest level of this old, super wobbly cat tower. he looks so confused hahaha

It woke me up and my cat was staring at me like "wtf are you doing" 😄

That was actually the rumble of Steph Curry's game-winning buzzer-beater in Dallas tonight finally making it back to California.

never forget

So the Koreans are right

Fuckin dog I thought you're psychic

Top 10 anime betrayals

IMPORTANT: If it strikes at night while sleeping: dive under your desk if possible (if you have one and it's in the same room and there's space underneath it)----otherwise just STAY IN BED and pull the comforter over you and try to protect your head with the pillow. Your bed is actually the safest place while sleeping!!

Do not blindly jump out of bed trying to think of other safe spots; if it's the Big One, stuff will likely be collapsing around you and you will not have time to run!! (watch videos of the Japan quakes and note how few seconds they have to react if you don't believe me)

Stay in bed!

TIL!

P Waves

Maybe think about securing your wares if you live in an earthquake-prone area.

Okay if that was close to a 5.0, then I am now officially frightened to what the larger ones are like.

My wife and I woke up. She said she could feel how the condo shook around the anchor points, then she fell back asleep (grew up here)

Not me though....that shit scared me

My cat was on her tower! But I have always played “EARTHQUAKE” with her so she was not phased haha

Edit: your username. I dig it.

Woke me up!

Everyone. Classic California roller. In my case I actually heard it building before I felt it (was already awake).

Breaking in to steal your lucky charms? Lol

My roommate would have slept through it if I hadn’t started screaming. Sorry Tyler.

I feel like the only thing this damaged was my comfort with sleeping naked.

There was a ceiling fan above the bed in my last apartment that I had removed. I once saw a blade fly off a ceiling fan in a restaurant and decapitate a pigeon sitting on one of the balcony chairs and have never felt safe near one since.

Surprisingly, experts agree to stay in bed if you are in one

That's the perfect expectation, a human thinks it's the dog just being dumb and the cat thinks it's the Human just being dumb.

San Jose, 2:40. Felt it! About 5 seconds. Made some bottles clink, strongest one I've not slept through etc since I moved here.

There are ultra-low frequency waves that travel before an earthquake. California should be getting a warning system soon that detects them. (Like Japan and Mexico.)

Woo Go Warriors!

If distance is 1460.95 miles away (https://imgur.com/EdAb5iu), and the Curry splash was 7 hours ago.

The rumble was traveling at 208 mph.

Downtown Oakland here, that was quite a jolt.

Looks to be a 4.7 @ Berkeley. https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map

Welcome to California. Enjoy that beer.

There’s an earthquake simulator at the Tech Museum in San Jose if you’re curious, but the earthquakes increase in magnitude in multiples of 10, so a 6.0, which would be a pretty big deal would be 10 times stronger. A 7.0, 100 Times stronger.

I was fapping and I thought it was God coming to get me

No pun, but I can relate, low rumble before actually feeling it. Thought I was dreaming somehow, NOPE!

Can we get a count of how many people this woke up? Genuinely curious how many people were woken up vs already up.

-woke me up-

packs bowl

Same here. Woke up for no reason then I thought the world was ending.

yea if a big one hits im fucked, my reaction was entirely just sitting here going, "huh."

Same, lets hope more aren't on the way! Sweet dreams!;)

Cell phone?

I shot right up in bed and yelled "ok guys this is it!"

Edit: downtown oak

pet-preparedness

Oh shit, I have coin

Biggest one I’ve felt in a while here in Oakland. A second or two of minor rumbling then a bigger shake. First time I’ve gone above ‘Excitement’ on the Did You Feel it questionnaire. Not going to be able to get to sleep for a while...

holy shit that was strong asf

Edit: Felt it in Sunnyvale. It lasted a few seconds.

Edit 2: Just thew a new screen and audio system together for my few month old gaming computer earlier tonight and thought it was done for. Gave me a damn heart attack.

Shout out to all the Georgians living on the third floor!

4.5 apparently out of Berkeley. The '89 quake was a 6.9 and way worse. A lot of newcomers don't know a controversial double-decker freeway used to run right over embarcadero in SF. The '89 quake ended that controversy.

Khajit has wares...

For a solid second I thought “this is how a scary movie starts a demon is in my house”.

Imagine all your competitors with broken ceramics tomorrow, guess it's time to inflate the pottery economy again boys

i am more impressed with your upstairs neighbors TBH.

Oh they definitely get bigger than this. Fortunately that's a lot less frequent. I'm guessing high 4s maybe 5.

Was still awake, hopped up real quick and put on my slippers with no plan at all except to be ready to run. I should really make a plan.

Me too. That's some grade-A spooky shit!

Just moved to California a month ago and I just sat there realizing I have no fucking clue what to do in an earthquake! But it was exciting just sitting there waiting to see how long it would last.

I was getting cereal, I thought someone was breaking in.

Yeah, I haven't felt an earthquake since that one that woke me up back in 2014 when we had a nice roller earthquake.

Edit: the Napa quake

Seems like a roll cage type structure around a bed would not be insane, would it? I mean we spend a third of our lives in bed..

So I googled it.. http://www.donaldmacdonaldarchitects.com/projects/industrial/bed.php

I've only been here six hours. Welcome to the bay area I guess.

It was that fucking Trix rabbit

Oh fuck you ❤️

Korea?

Santa Cruz! Felt it all the way down here. Woke me up and got my dogs startled.

What were you doing getting cake at 3am?

I actually just "woke" up a bit naturally from a dream I was having (unless there were a few small rocks that occured prior to the big pushes and pulls that did it)

Shortly, the room started moving back and forth.

Took a relative while until I wide-eyed realized "Oh shit son! Its an earthquake and I'm no longer motherfucking dreaming!" lol

Yeah, I did too. Why is that? You'd think that the shaking would wake you up, not 15 seconds or so before.

Same, heard rumbling and thought it was weird, then my bed jiggled and it took me a few seconds to realize what just happened.

2018 is off to a great start

Can confirm, I'm de

Yeah. Fucking this.

Yup felt it in El Cerrito

Redwood City checking in - about 3-4 intense seconds

Hello fellow first-timer-in-the-bay-and-from-Georgia-and-also-third-floor!

It's gonna be a horrible day, everyone got an awful night of sleep lol

/sub/theydidthemath

Scary... House really shook here in Marin 2:41am. Guessing a 5.0?

Damn nice reflexes. By the time I was awake it was settling.

I grew up here and it scared me too. I was in Santa Cruz in 1989 and I'll never be cool and blasé about quakes again.

Allll the adrenaline. Wide awake.

you mean you don't eat at 3am?

Lol damn that was fast to the computer lol

We are dog sitting, and this is her first earthquake as she's not native. Her reaction was to bark at the closet then wander around confused before going back to bed. Haha.

Felt it in berkeley, pretty intense

RIP

Hey me too! Except the beer.

Felt it in Hayward!

Was right about to go to bed, I'm wide awake now lol

felt in northern south bay felt like it shook a good 2-4 inches left and right?

I did in RWC. Holy shit that's the strongest one I've felt in a long ass time.

4.7 based on the USGS.gov site. Centered in Berkeley. Updated to 4.4

Felt it really strong in Berkeley!

Popped that cherry. :D

Here in Novato I was up my idiot parents who kept asking where it was. I'm like HERE FOOLS ITS HERE!

Fucking hell this was a lot stronger than the one from a week or two ago

I was waking up from a bad dream and thought it was part of it.

Watch out for replicas yo

Starting 2018 off real strong
