Danny Masterson Fired From Netflix's 'The Ranch' Amid Rape Allegations

Danny Masterson Fired From Netflix's 'The Ranch' Amid Rape Allegations

One of the women apparently came forward thanks in part to the work of Leah Remini, an actress and former member of the Church of Scientology who has produced a documentary critical of the religious group.

Good to hear that Scientology wasn't able to keep this under wraps.

Any Hollywood agents with rapist clients are probably pretty nervous right now.

If Leah Remini is able to take down Scientology we all owe her a debt of gratitude.

Fucking finally.

What about clients with rapist agents?

cough Adam Vinet cough

What the hell is the matter with you? I take you into my home, treat you like my own son- (better than your own son) shut up. How could you do something so stupid!? I'LL TELL you how, it's that DAMN Scientology. Creeping and stalking and hanging around talking about aliens and vessels like some kinda hop head! That's not where you come from, dumbass!

Yup. According to Leah Remini, the LAPD were also involved in a cover up.

Damn Millennials killing Scientology

Considering Ashton Kutcher founded a company that helps to end the sexual exploitation of children? I imagine he’s furious. I’m pretty bummed that I can’t watch That 70’s Show anymore without having to stare at a rapist, and I didn’t even know the dude. I guess we need a new drinking game: anytime Hyde says anything that could be interpreted as pervy/rapey, you take a shot. Alcohol poisoning all around!

I'd like to know how Ashton Kutcher feels about all this. I bet he's crushed tbh. The guy worked with Masterson for years on That 70's Show. It was where most of that cast got their start, it was their origin. It must really hard to believe someone you thought of as family for years has done something so heinous and evil.

She's a crusader, and clever, but no one can take down Scientology. It will have to die out naturally, through a failure to recruit new membership. What millennial can even afford to be a Scientologist, these days?

"What Netflix has done, feels like...I don't matter. The other women don't matter. Our pain means nothing, and we should be good little girls and shut our mouths. No!" she said. "I'm going to be an amazing woman who will NOT shut my mouth when I find out my rapist raped countless other women. I will NOT shut my mouth when Netflix tries to make us feel like we don't matter. We DO matter. We ARE important. We will see justice for what was done to us, and is continuing to be done to us...and for all those who knew/know and are either actively helping this serial rapist or are choosing to stay silent...YOU don't matter."

Netflix shouldn't treat accusations as proof. Nor should any company for that matter. So no, Netflix hasn't done anything to you.

Good to see that being a scientologist didn’t help him.

Was the church of Scientology helping him out?

good

What about rapists with rapist agents?

THAT is scary.

The fact that the LAPD might be corrupt is not lost on me.

But goddamn. How fucking terrifying is it that they are now corrupted by the CoS?? The one organization that seemingly no one can or will touch.

Edit. Lots of mails from people who didn't read my comment. I'm very aware of corruption in the LAPD.

The fact that the LAPD [is] corrupt is NOT lost on me.

Is that better?

Well its not really shocking that so many sexual predators and sexual harassment happens in hollywood when you take into consideration the rest of the US.

1 out of 3 4 Women & 1 out of 32 10 Men experience one or more incidents of sexual harassment in the workforce in the US. (see edit at bottom)

2 out of 3 Women experience one or more incidents of sexual harassment on the street in the US.

1 out of 4 Women & 1 out of 16 Men experience one or more incidents of sexual assault in the US.

1 out of 6 Women & 1 out of 33 Men experience attempted or completed Rape in their lifetime in the US.

Out of the 25% of women and 6,3% of Men who experience sexual assault only 20-30% of them report the assault to the authorities.

Out of the cases of sexual assault that are reported to the police, only ,on average, 20% are arrested, while only around 5% are prosecuted and only on average 3% are incarcerated.

So this isn't a Hollywood centric issue. Its a world-wide issue in regards to sexual boundaries, respect, victim-shaming and simple concept of consent and ethics. Luckily the amount of rapes in the US has dropped since 1980s by 60%, but the amount of rapes still happening are too high for any society that wants to move forward to a better future.

And This recent examination of the sexual abuse in Hollywood will be a great catalyst towards that future, as per usual a society in which we idolize celebrities, only by humanizing them and seeing them acknowledge the problem, and work to change to fix that problem, will push the society be more open to even accepting that there is a problem that needs to be discussed in the first place.

I googled to see who said this and I think the whole quote is even better.

(One of Masterson’s rape accusers, Chrissie Carnell Bixler, told The Daily Beast: Link)

“For me, what Netflix has done, feels like a continuation of how the Church of Scientology made me feel when I reported my rape to them, as well as how Danny Masterson made me feel when I would beg him for an apology, an explanation, anything. I was made to feel unimportant. I was made to feel like I didn’t matter. Like what Danny Masterson did to me didn’t matter. My body doesn’t matter, because it doesn’t belong to me. The trauma and emotional pain doesn’t matter, because I just don’t matter. ‘Danny Masterson is a celebrity. He flourishes and prospers in life. You protect that and reward that.’ -direct quote from the Church of Scientology. I don’t matter. The other women don’t matter. Our pain means nothing, and we should be good little girls and shut our mouths. No! I’m going to be an amazing woman who will NOT shut my mouth when I find out my rapist raped countless other women. I will NOT shut my mouth when Netflix tries to make us feel like we don’t matter. We DO matter. We ARE important. We will see justice for what was done to us, and is continuing to be done to us...and for all those who knew/know and are either actively helping this serial rapist or are choosing to stay silent...YOU don’t matter.”

Cult of Scientology is disgusting. I don't know how anyone can in good conscience support a "church" that has this as their policy. The powerful and the celebs must be protected even when they do harm. And the little people are to be sacrificed.

‘Danny Masterson is a celebrity. He flourishes and prospers in life. You protect that and reward that.’ -direct quote from the Church of Scientology.

Edit: reading this other article by The Daily Beast. Isn't this some sort of conflict of interest? When you have the Church saying not to report and you are also the captain of the police?

“The captain of that department, Cory Palka, goes to the Scientology Celebrity Centre often. There are pictures of him hanging at Celebrity Centre,” she says.

...

The Church of Scientology’s fundraising partnership with the LAPD’s Hollywood division through the PAL continues to this day. And one of the Scientology-affiliated celebrities who regularly participates in these PAL fundraising events is Danny Masterson.

“Scientology is very slick in that it’s partnered in this Police Activities League with the Hollywood division, and every year around Christmastime Celebrity Centre International right on Franklin presents the Hollywood Police Department with a check for this Police Activities League, which gives back to children,” says Remini, shaking her head. “What it’s done is it’s aligned itself as per its policies, because there are Scientology policies that say, ‘Safe-point yourself to the area police department because then nobody will attack your good works,’ so it’s all very pointed and calculated.”

It did for a while. I think eventually the echo chamber got too loud and they decided to cut their losses.

The Church of Scientology is HYDRA.

And they earned their tax exemption from the IRS by having P.I.s dig into the personal lives of IRS managers and threatened to sue nearly every IRS employee twice - once as a private citizen and again as a government agent.

A loss for a rapist and for scientology. The day is looking brighter already. ... *Looks out window. Actually it's still dark and grey here in Germany :(

I wonder if this has more to do with the controversy from yesterday or if they finally got more information. But maybe that is just me being cynical.

It's all the avocado toast they are eating.

I was recently in Hollywood and some Scientologist came up to me and handed me a personality test thingy. The second I saw the Scientology logo, I tossed it away and he saw me so asked me why. I told him my money is for me and they need to find a new way to fund their pyramid scheme. Dude was pissed.

Walking away I saw his colleagues hand the pamphlets to tourists. I just yelled from a distance "that's Scientology shit. Throw it away and walk away with your wallet intact"

They were not happy and followed me to my car at which point I asked them to find another way earn a living. Let's just say they took down my plate number and little do they know it was a rented car. Oh well!

/Rant... Didn't know where to post this experience till this thread popped up :)

Edit - This post has gotten so much traction, i would like to take a second and say ... Hi Karin!

Se7en is still an amazing movie. People still laugh at the antics of the principal from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off even though he got caught with child porn like 15 years ago. Just enjoy the shit you enjoy.

Likely to verify claims. We can't just assume people are guilty and fire them due to hearsay. They vetted the accusations, they checked out, he gets the boot.

I mean this in a good way. Leah Remini is becoming the Gloria Allred of Scientology victims. Say what you want about Allred, but one thing you can say is that she champions female victims and has fought the "old boy's network" for years. Remini should be praised for helping bring more attention to this story and for helping Netflix do the right thing.

It's only going to get worse with them now that the new Tax bill allows churches to endorse politicians.

Edit: it's endorse, not donate. Still bad.

Matthew Broderick killed two people with his car and got less than a 200 dollar fine, weird how few people know that

The statement continued, "In this country, you are presumed innocent until proven guilty. However, in the current climate, it seems as if you are presumed guilty the moment you are accused. I understand and look forward to clearing my name once and for all. In the meantime, I want to express my gratitude to the cast and crew that I’ve worked so closely with over the past three seasons. I wish them nothing but success. I am also so thankful to the fans that have supported me and continue to do so.”

Scientology or not I think we may be getting a little out of control here. The man is claiming his innonence. Does everybody just ignore that?

I'm in the same boat. It feels like he's a rapist. I feel bad for the women. But we have a standard in this country and when we all ignore the standard then we are witch hunting. We are all ready to burn the witch without due process. Any way I look at this it feels completely wrong.

I was a huge fan of that show too. I must've watched it entirely 4 or 5 times. It sucks that I'll never be able to see it the same way ever again.

Not defending Masterson, but the kid who played Hyde and the man who got fired today were likely very different people. Fame and scientology have a way of fucking with malleable minds

Thank you for including men in your stats. Though far less common, it’s important to note that big strong men can be victims too.

We support you /u/TheTerryCrews

Now he can return to a peaceful life of exorcising body thetans, licking floors clean and sucking David Miscavige's cock in the bathroom stall.

I was wondering why our clothes smelled funny. I thought it was our dryer! It's been filthy Scientology the entire time. And I just know Donna is down there bouncing around without a bra on...

Hyde your kids, Hyde your wife.

Hyde was my favorite character. :(

The story went viral yesterday and that guys Twitter blew up, his corporate email was posted and evidently blew up also. It had a role in it.

Oh, did we not tell you before you elected us?

Leah Remini, man. I used to spit hotfire at the television when I saw King of Queens because of her scientology links and how she seemed so sucky. But holy crap talk about winning me over, she should be nominated for some type of humanitarian award for what she is doing.

I love Masterson. I loved Hyde and I really enjoy The Ranch too. Its a shame he's a shitty person.

Check out Chrissie's twitter (@chrissiebixler), along with her husband's Cedric Bixler Zavala,(@cedricbixler_) singer for ATDI and Mars Volta. She has been talking about this for SO SO LONG. Cedric tweeted once that years ago Chrissie wrote a letter to Masterson asking for an apology and he wrote back with "a letter that would make your skin crawl." Chrissie and Cedric were also members of Scientology and since leaving, paired with this Masterson nightmare, have appeared to receive backlash from the church. They said they were being followed, their dog died, Cedric tweeted that if something happened to his family while on tour we know what happened.... Crazy stuff.

Everyone seemed to ignore the articles about the lead singer of At The Drive In bringing this up about Danny Masterson about 2 weeks ago, after his wife came forward as one of Masterson's victims: https://www.spin.com/2017/11/at-the-drive-in-cedric-bixler-zavala-danny-masterson-scientology/

No idea why Netflix have taken this long to address it.

I remember seeing a Tweet that basically amounted to the fact that they were ecstatic to see Hollywood being outed but these people are outed because they have a platform and are in the public eye, but there are Kevin Spaceys and Harvey Weinstein’s at every restaurant and every tech company and every hospital. It’s not contained and I’m worried as to what the next step is to combat it in every industry.

Laura Bush killed a guy

Right. People keep comparing this to the relatively rapid severing of ties with Kevin Spacey and Louis C.K., but both Spacey and Louis C.K. admitted they had done what they were accused of doing. It should be obvious that a completely different process would be followed when accusations are denied.

EDIT: To clarify, since some are confused. While Spacey has not admitted to some of the (many) accusations against him, his initial statement in response to Anthony Rapp's account of what happened basically amounted to, "I don't remember specifically doing that to Rapp, but it sounds totally plausible because that's the kind of thing I did."

Fucking what?

Netflix Exec Tells Woman The Company Doesn’t Believe Actor’s Rape Accusers. Then She Said She Was One.

That's a really confusing headline. I read it as '(Female) Netflix exec tells woman she doesn't believe the rape accusers, and then reveals that she (female Netflix exec) has also been raped by Masterson.'

The dangers of vague pronoun usage, folks.

Following you and writing your plates down? How is that not intimidation?

Upvote for saying "couldn't care less" instead of "could." And for standing up to Scientology and all that.

I thought this too, but it says at least one of the allegations is about an event in 2001.

So does this mean there is an opening to play Rooster now? Cuz sitting around drinking beer and being a sarcastic asshole sounds like thats right up my alley.

That's right... Laura Bush killed a guy.

I agree. If i owned the car i would have a different reaction but since it was a rental, i couldn't care less.

Even worse

As long as Sam Elliot is calling everyone a fucking moron, I'm still watching.

Besides, part 4 is already filmed I think.

If Kurtwood Smith is accused we riot

Quite frankly, I blame the demise of our nation around the catastrophic dijon mustard treason of 2011

Leah remini is such a hero of mine, to be able to turn her life around from 30 odd years in this cult to spreading light and truth about its disgusting practices, courageously and fearlessly being the only celebrity voice to speak up and battle this rich and powerful corrupt organisation. Her book, troublemaker, is amazing, I recommend everyone reads it. She's so tough and ballsy, I find her so inspiring.

The cult of scientology could bully the IRS - an organization that terrifies everybody else - into classifying them as a religion, yet they couldn't stop Netflix from firing Danny?

What a weird group. Even the limits of their influence don't make any sense.

i dont know if thats true. The scientology building in san diego has this old looking sandwhich shop or something near it. It has a help wanted sign but it is NEVER open. Found out not too long ago iits run by the scientology center and when young kids inquire about the job they are sent to the scientology building and they promise to get them a job n stuff if they join. ridiculously manipulative but im sure they have some purpose for poor members otherwise i dont see why they would do that..

Early 90s Scientology was far more powerful than today's Scientology, thanks to the internet and general bad PR in the media. They have been hemorrhaging rank and file members and have even closed centers.

/sub/crewscrew

Ironically, Rapey McRapeson is the only agent in hollywood with a strict no rapists policy.

Don't forget South Park, they played an absolutely huge role in raising awareness about Scientology

Not that I know of. Honestly if he's a scientologist, there's a good chance the church will defend him and he'll never be charged.

And how awful was the wife's email???? Holy shit.

Donna without a bra on is my first real crush

Hey, your wife, the rape victim, I hope she understands how bad she made my husband look. Shame on her.

Even worse

*they can go fuck themselves

Was he hyding?

Wait you mean I can enjoy someones work without being invested in their personal life?

He was hanging out. Down the street.

The rape allegations came when he was playing Hyde (2003).

Scientology is classified as an anti-constitutional sect in Germany, so it's positively incandescent.

better than your own son

Eric chiming in gets me every time

But he's still not charged right ? I don't know just asking !

Holy fuck. What a horrible look for Netflix.

That woman is Chrissie Carnell-Bixler who is Cedric Bixler-Zavala's wife of The Mars Volta and At the Drive-In fame.

He has been very angry over this on his Twitter.

https://twitter.com/cedricbixler_

And rightfully so.

Donna is a Scientoligist too and Fez has done some shit based solely on rumors though.

You guys don’t understand the industry. Netflix isn’t an employer. They don’t fire you. They have a contract with a private studio to produce The Ranch for however many episodes...

the kid who played Hyde and the man who got fired today were likely very different people.

I doubt it, he's been a scientologist his whole life.

Relevant and interesting article.

The Ranch is actually a good show and I don't think masterson's departure will effect anything.

Part of it is a misunderstanding of what rape actually is. There was a survey at one point where the respondents wouldn't admit to rape but would admit to 'holding a woman down to have intercourse', for example. (There's an article about it here). That survey was a long time ago so I like to feel that attitudes have changed at least somewhat, but it's hard to know.

And a lot of women and men don't understand how men can be raped because if they have an erection they must want it, right? And of course there's situations like 'we started having sex, they were into it and then wanted to stop but I wanted to finish... that's not rape, right?' This particular one comes up on the relationships sub a lot. So does sex with a sleeping SO (so they have a regular sexual relationship, but consent for sex while sleeping wasn't discussed beforehand).

I think society would benefit from some very frank discussions about this sort of thing in sex ed, but a lot of parents would probably argue against it.

Why the fuck would anyone from Netflix say that? Especially in the current sexual harassment climate?

She's a fucking inspiration, I adore her

I’d like to see that creepy letter he (they?) sent.

It's mostly kids born into rich families who are Scientologists.

Because it's easier to disbelieve an unnamed woman than condemn a named man.

I get that that's supposed to be disparaging, but that dude's bathroom stall is probably nicer than my bedroom.

I'm out of the loop on that one. What happened yesterday?

i think a lot of men don't realize they've been raped or sexually assaulted (by women) because of the current culture in america.

look how a lot of people treat young men or boys getting raped by 20+ year old "hot" teachers. society acts like these 13-16 year old boys hit the jackpot.

it's so ridiculous that south park had an episode about it.

Separation of church and... I mean it's not like the colonists were trying to get away from theocracy or religious persecu... the founding fathers definitely didn't say no political parti...

Actually USA, fuck it, y'all were on borrowed time anyway. By all means trash your democracy even further since citizens united limitless campaign funding apparently wasn't doing that fast enough.

It appears that's what the accuser said ~two weeks ago about Netflix's inaction. Belated as it their action may be, I'm sure she views this as a step in the right direction

It was an accident - there was no intent in what Broderick did. Apples and oranges.

The best part is that Hyde is a fictional character and has no actual relation to the real person of Masterson so...

I love how everyone cries for due process for terrorists, their favorite politician, and for cops accused of brutality on the job...

Yet no one is batting an eye at ruining people's lives and careers over this stuff.

Rape is terrible and I hope those who are guilty get what they deserve.

I also hope all of these people having their lives dismantled are actually guilty.

So, like all of them?

Grey is more common in British English. Both usages are correct. Colors are not capitalized.

The confusion in your statement really drives home a point to me. It's hard for us to reconcile our love for television personalities with the demons that sometimes wear those masks.

A third rate comedy starring Ashton Kutcher. I've only seen the pilot. It wasn't totally awful but the originality factor is about zero.

It's a dramedy, really. It gets better as it goes on, but it's pretty formulaic.

It's less nefarious than you think, and more just economics and harassment, because they do the same thing in Clearwater, FL. Basically, the CoS pays the police for off-duty security work. When you're a police officer, that kind of money helps big time. Covering for the CoS also prevents them from having to deal with the deluge the frivolous lawsuits they love to throw at anyone they deem as "SP", which can include police departments investigating their celebrity members.

It's really just time for the State governments of California and Florida, along with the Federal government to step in and deal with the CoS. They need their tax exempt status stripped and they need to be investigated for their crimes.

It only took forever
