The full study for anyone that actually wants to read it. The reporter's claims are obviously bullshit(you don't actually have to read the study to know that), but if you want some reasons, the study:
1)Only used white females for images
2)Recruited 97.3% of participants from facebook, so this is basically just a notch above a buzzfeed survey
3)Majority(2/3) female respondants
4)Majority(1/2) Asian/Pacific Islander respondents
5)Majority(97.6%) aged 18-25
6)Excluded data due to images looking 'ethnic-appearing features of the face that were not typical of white women'
etc...And that's just a 5 minute skim of the study.
edit: Since this got pretty popular, I'd just like to point out that I don't have any background in plastic surgery, and so I have no idea how to judge the actual study. I'm specifically criticizing the reporting of the study.
Side eyeing the shit out of this story.
How news people talk about such asinine BS with such seriousness? If this were my job, I'd hate myself.
You gotta rotate your nasal tip every 20 thousand miles or it'll go out of sync with the rest of your face.
Really getting the most out of that zoom feature
What the fuck is "nasal tip rotation"?
Yeah, he does my lawn every other Tuesday, he's a great guy
I imagine it's like being in retail/customer service where you know the customer you're dealing with is a cunt, but you still say "yes, sir/ma'am, I totally understand and I'm sorry" with a shit-grin smile on your face
I didn't need this.
Nah, pretty sure jesus didn't fit most of those
that must be the most beautiful man alive then
I've heard that before, yeah
TFW your nasal tip rotation is above 140 degrees.
There once was a man from Nantucket.
Whose dick was so long he could suck it
"Instructions unclear", he yelled out in fear
"My dick is now stuck in nose".
Don't let the illusion of academia fool you. Not all academic journals have stringent scientific standards. You can get pretty much anything published in some of them. Case in point, Adam Ruins Everything published the script of their health episode in the journal Advances in Nutrition and Food Technology just to show they would publish anything.
the whole concept of a most desirable face is completely subjective anyway.
What a fucking stupid news piece.
edit: i cede that 'completley' is incorrect. My criticism is aimed mostly at how society is influenced negatively by standards of attractiveness and beauty. What people perceive as attractive should be up to them, with little influence by huge far-reaching entities like the media, whose main concern is economic.
Nasal Rotation is hot
Attractiveness is only subjective to a degree.
Objectively we can say for sure that some people are more attractive due to their symmetry and other biological pointers of a healthy mate. Don't mistake one bullshit survey as being representative of the entire concept of attractiveness.
Have to remember Reddit's target demographic is almost the exact opposite of the main audience for TV news, especially morning shows.
Also, studies like this work great as time fillers or as "kickers" to end the newscast with. Send the viewer away with something that isn't negative like crime, politics, war ect.
I would bet the producer had 30-45 second to fill and had this ready as a backup.
I've practically master of that face. No sir! The customer is rarely right! And the fact that you have to remind me every minute about how right you are only proves my point that you should shut the fuck up and go somewhere else.
Sure. But does the news say "most desirable face" or "most desirable white face"?
It is known
Why did they choose white, young women?
They say so right in the paper:
Many of the canons used to define aesthetics for white faces are not necessarily applicable to faces of other races or ethnicities. In addition, it is well known that the aesthetic nasal tip is different between males and females. As such, we limited our analysis to white female faces of a similar age cohort.
Unlike what your stats 101 class said, some studies are actually stronger for only using a certain sex, race, and/or age. I'm surprised you blindly listed these as reasons for this being a poor study, and that everyone blindly upvoted you.
Eh, not exactly. Some people look great from the side. For white women, it's often a prominent, round forehead, and flush straight-line facial features from brow to chin, or such. I wasn't looking for it, but notice they've all got similar, upturned noses as well.
Now, where you say that pretty much everyone looks like poo from the side, I might say that far-Eastern/northern Asians might have a less generally appealing look from the side, more commonly. For Asian women, the forehead and chin tend to sweep back.
Of course, these aren't absolutes. Here, a lot of typical Asian traits, from the swept forehead and somewhat recessed chin, to the brow not being flush at all with the rest of the face etc., it doesn't seem to matter- her complexion looks quite attractive if you ask me.
Though, she has more depth than might be usual, particularly in the cheeks and eyes, where Asian faces are often a bit flatter in that regard. In this example, the model does have a nicely formed forehead, the nose lips chin etc all exhibit the types of features that often make up an attractive face, but she's lacking depth of the eyes and cheeks. From brow to chin is fairly straight or flush, but too much so. There's little to no separation from the brow to bridge of the nose, at least from the side profile. There's no recess there etc.
Some Southeast Asians can be quite different. They often have button noses and especially recessed bridges, sometimes even to the point that there isn't even any nose between the brow and the dorsum, in rarer cases. They often have the more rounded, taller foreheads, but the straight line from brow to chin isn't always a thing. Often, the lower portion of the face juts forward a bit, and usually more pronounced brows.
There's all sorts of different factors, and no one factor is particularly attractive without other parts of the face complimenting it. Hell, the whole head can completely distract a good combination of facial features, and none of it has to mean that a good-looking, or not so good-looking side profile view will directly, positively or negatively affect how the face looks at other angles. How often an asian person's side profile might not look good while quarter and front views tell a completely different story, is especially example.
Even makeups that I think might be considered a bit unattractive can look especially attractive. To me, that seems like the case with this woman's nose. She's got a slightly aquiline, or hooked nose, but for some reason, it seems to work well with her overall face shape. Even the lack of any recess in the bridge of her nose seems to look good.
And of course, there's a ton of variation between all people. Everything's fairly subjective, and just as in fashion, all sorts of "rules" can be broken. Hooked noses generally don't look that great, but on rare occasions, they do. Button and upturned noses are usually the most attractive, but sometimes they do not fit with the rest of the face as attractively as different type of nose.
It's pretty clear both reddit and tv is for retards but different kind of retards.
Tv audience: OMG LOOK AT KARDASHIANS NEW TOILET BRUSH!!!
Reddit default subs audience: I'm so sophisticated and I have such distinct exquisite tastes, I didn't watch tv since 1992 it's for simple people. OOOH THOUSANDTH FART JOKE IN THIS THREAD I MUST CHANGE THE WORD ORDER AND MAKE A NEW ONE QUICK!
You would be surprised how many people flip out on you at gas stations, for every single minor detail. Ask someone for their ID and they act like you asked them to fuck their first born child. I've been working there 4 weeks and have been yelled at more than all my 10 years in retail combined.
rotate at 75°
I lost it at that part
You ever met Jesus?
I too saw that TIL from a few days ago.
I feel like your not finishing your word. Are you saying spaghetti day?
Study shows studies are wrong.
Gotta zoom in on the pixels within the pixels, you know, the government machine layer.
So he did return! Apparently every other Tuesday.
I love the in the article.
Is it possible that it's only because this is a doctored image and CFA 106 is the only one that looks natural?
Buzzfeed words like "studies show", "experts say", "tests have seen" all make me very skeptical about their reliability if the sources aren't directly named in the following sentences or so.
It's cuz it's a fuckin wolf.
I'd really love to say something along the lines of "Sir it seems you are regularly dissatisfied with the services that we provide here. May I suggest [COMPETITOR] down the road, I'm sure they may be able to cater to your standards."
I'm too much of a pussy, so a retail grin and generic platitudes for me.
Can't believe they left out in that video.
You misunderstand, these are new scasters.
reminds me of key and peele "black ice"
That is where I exhaled slightly harder through my nose than usual
probably the nice nose
It was going so well until the last line.
Local affiliates have nothing at all to do with the cable news channel. This is a local morning show, of course it isn't quality news. The only thing "Fox" is the rest of the programming on the channel, like The Simpsons.
News producer checking in, that's most likely the case. I try to keep my kickers a little less...uhh....weird, but hey, sometimes youre left with crumbs.
How did this get published in JAMA?
Bible Spoiler: Jesus dies in the middle
Because it's not a study about who has the "most desirable face." It's a study which tries to determine the idealized nasal tip projection and rotation among young women (aged 18-25).
In doing so they reduce variables by keeping other factors (ethnicity) as constant as possible, and they did consider the potential difference between online and traditional respondents but found the difference to be negligible.
I'm not defending the study here, I only skimmed it, but the parent's dismissal of the study is as bad as Fox's misrepresentation.
What's with the subtly racist title? "Aint havin none of that?"
Jesus Christ, might as well name it: "Blacks don't be likin when whitey get all up in they grill"
Don't forget to replace your eyeball fluid as well.
There's definitely at least one person in this comment thread who thinks the black newscasters were being racist somehow.
Recruiting young white females from Facebook really is just a notch above a buzzfeed survey.
Someone doesn't play Fallout.
Notice how the point of this girl's nose gives the appearance of her nose being upturned.
Artistic renditions of people often exaggerate attractive features like the nose there.
These are all exaggerated examples. Even the IRL girl has a much more pronounced upturn than the video suggests is found "most attractive."
Or it could be that the conversation topic is fucking stupid as hell.
I've worked at a gas station where my manager told me to say just that to someone if they started getting nasty with me. Refuse them service and tell them Sunoco is right down the road.
To be completely fair, they did say a "most desirable face" is completely subjective, rather than general attraction, which (I think) is a different research question. For general attraction you just have to prove that certain characteristics are almost universally and cross-culturally preferred. For there to exist an objective "most attractive face" you'd have to prove that one specific face, out of the infinite number of possible faces would be preferred across people and cultures.
The tip can't be too high or too low. That's why they're saying 106 looks the most attractive in this video.
Except where you criticised the study
so this is basically just a notch above a buzzfeed survey
IN THE MIDDLE OF WHAT
"The traditional focus-group participants were undergraduate students at the University of California, Irvine, whose online social-network contacts were also used."
That's why there is a half-asian group of survey takers btw. And they're mostly middle class and up and going to UCI so they've very much bought into the western ideal of beauty which is ironically perpetuated by a global media that is then using a study of people influenced by this media to spout more shit about how effective their influence has been. A full-circle news story indeed.
This always bugs me. If you go into a store with intent to purchase alcohol or cigarettes, or even lotto tickets, have your fuckin I.D. It's the law for these people to ask you for it. They could lose their job if they don't.
It's gotten to the point that most every time I am asked for my I.D. the cashier seems hesitant to ask. I always try to reassure them that it's totally fine and it's their job. So many people get kissed pissed about it.
I can almost hear them say "bruh"
So I'm not saying that this is a real argument against your point, but I've heard of JAMA. Like...a lot. From doctors. I've never heard of "Advances in Nutrition and Food Technology". When you google that, the factoid about Adam Ruins Everything publishing in it comes up on the first page.
Maybe that's just amazingly major news and I'm just not up to date in my Nutrition and Food Technology research, but it kinda seems like that case is only a step or two above "Did you know that someone published something ridiculous in OneBigBug's Journal of Cool Science Stuff?" and isn't particularly an indictment of the scientific publishing process.
I think it's when you turn on Super Mario 64 and at the start screen you use the little hand curser to grab Mario's nose and stretch it upwards or something.
That is given in like every 'reddit, what's your best comeback thread for xyz situation' or any such variation. I'm also thinking that when most people say it it would sound cringey as shit.
Because it's a shitty news program rather than a shitty study
RES-tagged as international facial specialist
It's a study which tries to determine the idealized nasal tip projection and rotation among white young women (aged 18-25).
There, fixed it for you.
If you are "controlling" for ethnicity by simply removing all non-white ethnicities, then the conclusions of your study cannot even be generalized to the whole (restricted) group of "young women (aged 18-25)".
...with his dick, not his eye, in his socket.
New scatsters. They're serving up fresh shit on the hour every hour.
No, "Advances in Nutrition and Food Technology" looks to be published by what is often referred to as a "predatory publisher" - that is, a group who pretend to be a scholarly publisher but will actually publish anything for a fee. Indeed, although the publisher has a list of dozens of journals, many of them are completely empty. It's an indictment of a problem with the newer open-access journal system where authors are expected to provide publication fees, but it's not really meaningful to compare it to a 'real' journal.
Also, this isn't "JAMA", it's "JAMA Facial and Plastic Surgery", which is published as part of the JAMA Network, but has substantially lower prestige than the flagship JAMA journal. In that context, this paper isn't so unreasonable - although its methods may not be ideal, they appear to be described clearly and limitations are acknowledged in the paper. In that context, a publication in a lower-tier journal is reasonable.
Drowning in the shower or when it rains
I would say it's possible, but probably not the only factor in this case, or in any other.
If she had a real life beak, it would probably look worse than a doctored alternative.
It's the rotation of your nasal tip.
Blinker fluid should work for that, right?
Ebaums World. I feel like I'm looking at an ancient cave drawing trying to decipher what it all meant.
After a while it's like it's not even a word and he's just making cat sounds.
Enlarge the Z-axis
Lol you know the demographic of this site right? They think this stereotypical shit is hilarious and original. Don't even waste your time.
That's the wife of one of the princes of England. I'll never understand America's obsession with that family...
Your neighborhood affiliate morning show that happens to broadcast on Fox is not at all tied to Fox News Channel. Nice try though.
It makes people look more like pigs though, humans be having some weird beauty standards
I never really noticed before, but his nose looks kind of like a hoof.
Instructions unclear; dick stuck in nose.
I read that's what happened to Micky Rourke.
You can tell because of the way that it is
You don't need to have seen that post to know that "Experts say" and "Studies show" is a the annoying buzz word of the past few decades.
My favorite way of saying "go fuck yourself" to rude ass customers is to smile big, lock eyes with them, and in the most chipper tone, tell them that "I hope your day is as pleasant as you are!" Then I just watch them shoot daggers at me from their eyes, all the while I'm smiling.
Quoting John Oliver doesn't help an argument.
But now you do
It's actually female Asians/Pacific Islanders between the ages of 18 and 15 who use facebook that are attracted to white people.
You can read her eyes like a language. "Is anybody else seeing this sh*t?!"
No, it's when the nasal tip rotates.
