A deer goes for a morning skip across the beach

I don't know why I love that BOING! BOING! motion so much.

I didn't know they actually bounced like this, I thought it was a Disney invention, it's adorable

It's immensely satisfying

"I didn't know they actually bounced like this"

I love this. I've been having a challenging few weeks and this is honestly an inspiration to me.

This is more enjoyable if you say “boing” every time he lifts off.

Dogs bouncing like this through the snow too

One day I hope to be as happy as that deer

Looking at the parent comment's username, that was my risky click of the day.

That type of bouncing is called "pronking" or "stotting". It even has a wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stotting

Stotting (also called pronking or pronging) is a behavior of quadrupeds, particularly gazelles, in which they spring into the air, lifting all four feet off the ground simultaneously. Usually, the legs are held in a relatively stiff position and the back may be arched with the head pointing downward. Many explanations of stotting have been proposed; there is evidence that at least in some cases it is an honest signal to predators that the stotting animal would be difficult to catch.

Even looks like he froze solid on impact.

Come at me bro! boing boing boing...

Skipping makes life so much more fun. Have a dog? Skip around with them and they'll catch the zoomies. Skipping makes everyone feel good.

/sub/bettereveryloop

It's actually just a bottle of water :-)

Was anyone else expecting it to just fall into a deep hole filled with water?

I'll be honest, I am subscribed to so many diverse subs, I clicked on this without seeing which one. I was nervous and tense wondering if the deer would skip peacefully, slip, fall through the ice, get eaten by a bear at the last second, or have rocket feet added and blast off into space.

Oh deer.... Skip this one.

This is called stotting. The wiki link has possible explanations for this behavior.

that would be this one https://streamable.com/zohu2

Have a turtle? Skip them across the ice and they’ll catch even more zoomies!

Yes, because this gif was posted a while back with an edit where it does exactly that. I didn’t realize what sub I was in so I kept waiting for it to happen.

Yep, I clicked at work; in that 'Jesus take the wheel' mood today.

there is evidence that at least in some cases it is an honest signal to predators that the stotting animal would be difficult to catch.

Sounds logical. More movement, harder to lock on.

Have you tried being more bouncy?

I don't think it's that. I think it's more "this thing is hyper fit and clearly very healthy and will be difficult to catch"

I was thinking WB. Reminds me of Pepe LePew

WOW that Pepe LePew is REALLY rapey... It's been a long time since I've watched that.

edit: ty to the gif-master

it's even more enjoyable if you put it to music

SOEMBODY GIVE THAT PUP CPR STAT!!!

I’m subbed to /sub/natureismetal and I was terrified some predator would swoop out of nowhere and just rip that deer in half. Then I saw it was eye bleach, and I breathed a sigh of relief.

I think my feed is essentially 50/50...

sproink!

That squeaky little girl at the end is adorable.

"Thanks! I've been at it for just over 6 months, so there's plenty more where that came from!"

And somewhat scary if you make crushing and exploding sounds.

BOOOOOM BRHHHKHKHJHJH BOOOM BRHKHKHKHKH

When I was 17/18 I was walking with about 4 other guys and we all just linked arms and skipped down the block. I was in a small town with no sidewalks. When we reached the end of the block we broke it off, laughing turned around and saw this woman in an SUV laughing her butt off while we sheepishly got out of her way. One of my favourite memories from that period of my life.

Many explanations of stotting have been proposed; ...

Maybe it's just fun.

edit: added quote

The deer above isn't alarmed. His tail is down. I'm not sure exactly what species he is but he looks something like a sika (small elk). The white in their tails shows all the time unlike whitetail who only show white when their tail is up (alarmed, like you said). Also, I've done a lot of sika hunting, and they bounce a lot like in the vid above. But I've never seen one bounce when alarmed. They run like madmen.

Also

their strongest sense is vision

It varies a bit but generally the strongest sense for any deer/deer-like-animal is smell.

You can hear it in your mind!

😐

I'm not a kid anymore but I try to make the most of it. Skip to take out the compost, skip to the mailbox, skip in public to embarrass my boyfriend (sometimes he joins in!). Sometimes it'll make a stranger smile. Share that happy energy!

It's amazing how much it gets your heart rate up. It's invigorating. It's just for fun. Do it when you can!

:-( poor little dog

Pepe LePew is super creepy, even as a child I was uncomfortable. In a way I think the creators knew that and that's why he never got the girl.

Now that I think about it I actually haven't skipped in years (ever since I was a kid).

This gif makes me want to skip again haha

Oh boy, thismakes me feel much better :-)))

It does give off that Muhammad Ali float like a butterfly sting like a bee look

making my way downtown, walking fast, faces pass, and I'm home bound

That's exactly what I said in my head on ever bounce.

Fun fact: there are 20 boings in this gif, so Bambi here is traveling at a rate of about 1.67 boings per second

THIS

IS

BEAUTIFUL

The lesson imparted from Pepe LePew was "don't be too rapey, it's not a good look"

Boing...Boing...Boing...

If it makes you feel better that's edited. He immediately took puppy out of snow.

What a conniving bastard

Sproink!

Majestic, one might add.

Hope you're okay man, don't listen to the other guy. If you ever need someone to talk to.. :)

I hear the flute thing from Pepe le Pew.

God damn hahahaha

For some reason I imagined it more like it stepping in the squishy ground like gross gross shit shit shit gross gross gross

Wonder if there’s a sub for soundtracks. Something like photoshop battles, but with gifs snd music

The best part is that there is a name for that motion, and it is the best name:

Pronking

(It's also called 'pronging' or sometimes 'stotting', but I think we can all agree that 'pronking' is by far the most fun of those words to say.)

Came here for that gif, leaving happier that he doesn’t actually fall into a puddle-hole.

It's parading. Look at me! I can do this shit. You want me? I don't even care. You have no chance.

It's like the animal dab. The deer gucci gang... gucci gang... gucci gang... gucci gangggg.

I think you're right and that's why they tried mitigating it by having Penelope turn rapey in For Scent-imental Reasons, when Pepe had his stripes painted black.

It seems to have worked seeing as it won an Oscar.

Edit: I can only find it with commentary, but like most of the looney tunes, you don't really need the dialogue, so... here:

IDFWY

Because deer got that attitude

I'm trying to figure out if that's a wedding venue in the background. Looks like a nice place to antelope

That's the key. Be more bouncy!

This looks like the deer is just having fun, but it's actually alarmed and trying to warn other deer in the area of danger. Whitetail deer will sometimes stamp one foot at danger, but their strongest sense is vision, so their main warning signal is flashing their bright white tails in the air as they run away. Mule deer and related blacktail deer, whose strongest sense (edit: other than smell) is hearing, do this "4-legged ground stomp" called stotting that makes a loud enough low-pitched noise to warn others over a large area. There are some other potential explanations (see the link), but they mostly involve some predator-evasion purpose.

Just because he is bouncing doesn't mean he is happy!

Best thing I saw today, thanks OP!

This one makes me laugh every time:

I always laugh when I see this. Thankfully, I learned later that this was just a bottle of water and some video editing :)

/sub/noisygifs

I just looked at that page of deer pictures for way too long.

Everything is a cycle. It all comes and goes.

I'm sorry you've had a challenging few weeks; but they will pass and before you know it you'll be loving where you're at.

Grew up in Appalachia, live in coastal Oregon now. The blacktails we have here and the whitetails from back home are entirely different in almost every way. OP's vid looks like a coastal blacktail and they prance-run like this when they are spooked. We have a troop of them that literally bed down right outside our house constantly so I get to watch them every day. The run like a whitetail but if you see this prancing then you know there's something wrong and they are definitely signaling to the other deer in proximity.

This is in Poole Harbour, I have ridden and run this route hundreds of times, the sunsets are spectacular at times, but I have never seen a Deer there!

skipping is a required skill in the US Military. I always found that funny.

Now this is a novelty I can get behind

I'm guessing that if they walked normally, they'd just sink into the wet sand...

Here's another example

The deer above isn't alarmed. His tail is down.

Mule deer don't put their tails up when alarmed. They stot. . I spooked several mulies this year that did the same thing.

It varies a bit but generally the strongest sense for any deer/deer-like-animal is smell.

Fair enough, I should have added that caveat, but I was talking about senses useful for signaling danger quickly over a large area.

Thank you. My brain went right to Pepe Le Pew as soon as I saw it.
