30 DAYS LEFT to register as a democrat and vote for Bernie in NY, please join our global phone banking team to call all non-dem non-gop voters today!
As you might have already heard, New York has a (special and absurd) upcoming register to vote for the democratic primaries deadline of October 9. After this date, green party, working families party, non affiliated, and all other voters not registered as democrat will NOT be able to vote for Bernie for the New York democratic primaries.
These voters make up ~20% of voters in New York state and they are very likely future Bernie supporters if they knew about him. Too bad the first democratic debate will be after this deadline.
That's why we're stepping up to call all non-dem non-gop voters. Regardless of where you live, if you:
Love talking to people about Bernie
Speak English (Spanish and other languages a plus too!)
Have internet connection and / or a telephone
...please join us! You can sign up here, also please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org to ensure that we don't end up in your SPAM folder and we will send you instructions on how to phone bank for Bernie and phone numbers to start calling today! (6pm to 9pm)
You can also organize a phone banking party! Just let us know at email@example.com and we'll help you get set up!
We've already started making calls and are making good progress but we need more help! Check out our progress in real-time! Let's get to our first goal of 40,000 calls!
Remember, you don't need to be in New York or even in the US to volunteer, see FEC guidelines.
Also, HAPPY BIRTHDAY BERNIE!
This seems pretty urgent.
After this date, green party, working families party, non affiliated, and all other voters not registered as democrat will NOT be able to vote for Bernie for the New York democratic primaries.
While the push is important, and everyone should volunteer, I want to point out an important point that's been a little lost in the telephone game - there are actually 2 deadlines here, for different things. The October deadline is for previously registered people who want to change their party to Democrat. After that date, newly registered voters will still be able to register and for whatever party they desire, the deadline for those new voters is ~25 days before the primary this spring.
I worry that this misinformation may cause people who have not previously registered to "give up" after October 9, when that is not the case! The registration drive has been great, and has really lit a fire under NY grassroots groups, which is awesome. But let's spread the word that hope is not lost for people who are not currently registered after Oct 9. They can still get involved and sign up to register to vote as Democrat for a few months after October 9.
In Missouri, and I'm assuming some other states, you just pick a side when you go vote. You still have to be a registered voter, but not registered for a party.
I'm not sure if you've done this already but reaching out to college organizations like College Democrats to host an on campus voter registration drive would help.
They're very easy to organize and a lot of students will register because it's easy and on the spot. I organized 2 on campus voter registration drives for a couple days back in 08 and we got around 750 new voters registered.
Goal #1 : 40,000
Days left : 29.5
Required per day : 1,334
Today (11am CST) : ~900
Their counter is broken
5:15pm CST : ~900 calls made
This is awesome. Thank you for organizing this. I feel like this should be stickied.
Ya, you can't vote in the Democratic primary if you aren't a Democrat. Is that surprising to some people?
If anyone could vote in any primary, like Democrats voting in the Republican primary, or vise-versa, it would be chaos, and every party would simply reflect the demographic of every voter, making the party system even more worthless than it already is.
Texas is the same.
Some states have open primaries, others closed. Check out this page for info about all the state primaries: http://voteforbernie.org/
Totally agree. The phone bankers are only calling unaffiliated people right now so for them the deadline does hold. It is important though that everyone has a good understanding of the voter registration process overall and 100% agree that we want to make sure people know that new voters will be able to register up until 25 days before the primary.
Aren't most of the debates designed to make it hardest to vote for him in primaries?
Was looking for this info and couldn't find it
Open Primaries vs Closed Primaries. Its a thing.
GREAT idea! We will get on that!
Why is the first debate after the last day to register? Wtf
Many states (AL, AR, GA, IN, MI, MO, MT, ND, PR, SC, TN, TX VA, VT, WI) have open primaries and caucuses where you can participate in the Democratic election even if you are a Republican.
The first debate is not scheduled to take place until after the deadline. Bernie does tend to do well with independents, as he has been one for so long.
So, in that way, the debate schedule does hurt him.
Looks like everywhere I've lived is closed, so that'd explain why I thought they all were! Thanks for sharing.
EVERYBODY JUST DO IT BEFORE OCTOBER 9 IN CASE THIS GUY IS A HILLARY DRONE TRYING TO REDUCE OUR TURNOUT
SC and TN also have open primaries.
because the president of the Democratic committee worked for Hillary's campaign and skewed the debate dates in her favor to keep everyone else out of the spotlight.
Guess how many people are going to see Bernie for the first time in NY and say "well shit, I wish I could register democrat now but its too late"
I live in Northern VA, and I'm willing to go up one weekend and help with canvassing before the deadline (and pick up others on the way up if they want to go).
If someone has info on what events are going on & where, or wants to go with, PM me! I could use a quick change of scenery.
