average person eats 3 spiders a year" factoid actualy (sic) just statistical error. average person eats 0 spiders per year. Spiders Georg, who lives in cave & eats over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted

Spiders Georg is my hero.

Y’all only been eatin’ 8 a year?? Rookie numbers.

Gunna have to call bullshit on this. According to my calculations Spiders Georg would have to eat 58 405 479.5 spiders a day. Almost 41 thousand a second. Spider Geord is a fraud

Its an old joke to prove that people will believe anything they read on the internet. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/spiders-inside-her/

In a 1993 PC Professional article, columnist Lisa Holst wrote about the ubiquitous lists of “facts” that were circulating via e-mail and how readily they were accepted as truthful by gullible recipients. To demonstrate her point, Holst offered her own made-up list of equally ridiculous “facts,” among which was the statistic cited above about the average person’s swallowing eight spiders per year, which she took from a collection of common misbeliefs printed in a 1954 book on insect folklore. In a delicious irony, Holst’s propagation of this false “fact” has spurred it into becoming one of the most widely-circulated bits of misinformation to be found on the Internet.

You gotta be careful around everyone these days. I was walking down the street at 7:30 yesterday and a guy pulled out a SCISSORS. Luckily I was agile enough to reach into my pocket and pull out a rock. Coz if I had pulled out paper, man I would have lost.

In America you can pull out pistol which changes the rules of the game.

Chainless Bicycle

Chainless Bicycle

These are great for when you want something far more mechanically complex, heavier, hard to maintain, and inefficient.

The only advantages these have are novelty.

There's a reason that every bike you see uses a chain drive. They are amazingly efficient, reasonably light weight, and easy to maintain. If keeping your trouser leg is important to you, then put a chain guard on it. If you want something weather sealed, just put a full chain guard on it. These even exist with an oil bath, but you're loosing losing out on much of normal bike's ease of maintenance with those. Still got to be easier than this nonsense.

If you really got to have a chainless bicycle, then just use a belt drive. This rod drive this is really ridiculous.

You might have guessed that I am not a fan.

Edit: That was more responses than I normally get, thanks for all the good points. I feel I should clarify a few things. I am only talking about bicycles, not motorcycles. I am not knowledgeable enough to comment on shaft driven motorcycle, but expect the comments noting the benefits of shaft drives for some motorcycles are entirely correct. One of the disadvantages of a shaft drive for a bicycle is the need to support the system, and keep properly aligned while torque is applied. The additional material needed for this seems insignificant for a motorcycle, but not so for a bicycle. Also the major fluctuations of torque that take place with the low RPMs that are inevitable for a bicycle complicate this further.

As for the comments stating that shaft drives require less maintenance, I believe them to be accurate too. But while chains on bicycles do require frequent oiling, and fairly frequent replacement, neither task is difficult or time consuming. When repairs are required for a shaft drive, the parts are hidden behind covers, and it's hard for me to believe that repairs would be trivial. That said I don't have first hand experience with this, so may have misspoken, but I think it's wise to differentiate between ease of repair and robustness.

It's worth pointing out that bicycle parts are fairly well standardized across brands. I can walk into a bike shop and ask for an 11 speed chain, and get one that works without more questions (except maybe quality). I don't need to tell the shop what make, model, or year of bicycle I have. With a shaft drive we are introducing many proprietary interfaces. It inevitable introduces many more difficulties in stocking and for consumers to get spare parts.

For rental bikes, this mechanism has been used extensive. Mechanical sturdiness and robustness, and able to survive abuse and weather is more important than efficiency in these cases.

Oh, don't you fucken start with me!

It's more realistic to compare this with a hub gear than with a derailleur geared bike. At least when we bring in chain guards, our options to have a derailleur is very limited. The chain can't fall off a properly adjusted bike with a hub gear. Just as it can't fall off a single speed that is reasonably well maintained and of reasonable quality.
