What exactly is it in smoke that makes it difficult to breathe?
I understand this is a broad or vague question as smoke can have many kinds of things in it based on the material burning. Still, given that, what is happening physiologically to make it difficult to breathe? I imagine the smoke, unless there's a LOT of it, isn't actually displacing a ton of oxygen?
Bonus points for anyone who can tell me how well these might be able to help someone in breathing if they were surrounded by smoke/fire. Just curious. They're supposedly 95% effective in filtering out particles that are 0.3 microns or larger in size.
